New to forum. Brake question

Hello,
I just purchased a 67 Corvair, and had some brake questions.

Have any of you purchased caliper brackets from California Corvairs?
I just ordered brackets,(not due in 'til next week),but I am impatient to get started. I was curious what year S-10 rotors I need, so I can start machining the hubs.

Also, if anyone has any part numbers for brake hoses that they used.

Thanks, Eric

When you bought the kit, you should have asked them at CC to email you the instructions. That way you could get started. Now they won't open until Tuesday.

I just ordered a front disc brake kit online from Clarks Friday Morning. 2 hours later, I called and asked them to email me the instructions. 15 minuteslater I had them, so I could start getting hubs ready. Clark's is a complete kit, no running around to find any parts to complete tthe installation.

Anyway, here is the forward from the CC part number kit listed online with the instructions there, but very fuzzy. Good luck. You will have to get calipers, pads, hoses, bolts to secure calipers, bolts to secure bracket and spindle back to the suspension.

You might be able to find a way to get those instructions of their site, but I couldn't figure it out.

Last year, I did a front disc brake upgrade using Scarebird brackets and GM Metric (compatible) calipers. I would guess the California Corvair brackets are more of less equivalent. Here is my thread. If you have any questions, fell free to ask away.

Thanks so much for the responses.

I definitely should have inquired at the time, but I neglected to. The rotor year info is mostly what I needed, so I can bother my friend with a brake lathe tomorrow, while he is off.

I was sure I finally found and old car that didn't really need a brake upgrade. But, I only had it one day, when it started squeaking and darting, on my way home from the DMV. I forgot reliability is another one of the great things about discs. It also started leaking fuel and oil from the fuel pump, all over my amazingly clean engine bay.

I live in Summerville SC (Near Charleston). The car is a 4dr., but I bought anyway. It was too nice and had factory A/C that works. You definitely need that around here.

I will post pics, if I can figure out how.

Thanks, Eric

Nice car. You are not too far away. I am near Savannah with my 2 1966 Corvairs.

I will start pulling front brake parts off my More Door on Tuesday. Probably get machine work done Wednesday.

Nothing wrong with a More Door. Here is Donna & my 1966 More Door, which I am putting the disc brake kit on. It is up for sale also.

You can get bearing and seals from Corvair vendors.

Or find other sources within your budget with the numbers in this link.

Cool car! When I did my conversion with Scarebird brackets last year, I bought these rotors. Granted they were cheaper before inflation, but they've worked well so far.

You did.
Corvairs are among the best stopping of any cars from the 1960s with the standard drum brakes.
The Late Model (which you have) has brakes that are the same as a Chevelle.

You have an "issue" with the original excellent brakes that can be repaired and get your Corvair back to stock original.

Unless you have a right swerve issue when applying brakes like I have for 4 years and many times under the car replacing parts to no avail. New shoes. Honed cylinders with rebuild kits, new hoses, NOS drums and left adjusted to the max tight possible, blend several times to include watching flow from each cylinder and still right front brakes sooner than left. I gave up on the frustrating issue. Ibought the disc brake kit to resolve it, so my wife could drive it without wrecking the More Door before we sell it.

AWESOME! A 500 4 door with A/C. Who has one of those??? And a radio delete. I like it. We like it.
Welcome. Be sure to look into your local Corvair club as well as our mother club CORSA.

I hope. The only thing I didn't do was blow out the front lines line from the bulkhead fitting to the wheel cylinders. I will blow out the hard lines this time and inspect the left hard line for any kinks and crimps.

With the Russel speed bleeders I just use my fingertips on the brake pedal. If there were any resistance I would feel it.
