Oil leaking . . .

New to me in December - 1968 Monza 2-door coupe.

I have just replaced the viton o-rings on the push rod tubes and rocker studs. Cold set valves - thanks to Dave Motoheads video - and getting ready to do a start and warm valve setting. Still have the valve covers off - about to put on the 1/2 valve covers.

I added 4-1/2 quarts of fresh oil to the motor and oil filter. Then I noticed oil dripping from the left head? Fortunately I had a pan below both sides. Left side ran/dripped about 4 to 5 ounces and right side dripped about a teaspoon.

I had assumed (there I go . . ) that the oil would go to the pan and lower end - not run out of the head?! Looks like it was coming from the #6 intake push rod tube - maybe the exhaust also?

Reasons for this issue? Is this also why there had been so much oil in the valve cover when I removed it? Kind of explains why there was so much hot oil flying around (and on my shirt sleeves) when I did an initial warm valve re-set. I had assumed (there I go again . .) that the o-rings were old, brittle and letting too much oil pass them by. It's why I replaced them.

Thanks for your insights . . .

several things can cause these to leak.

bent tube
sharp edge on the area where it seats.
debris in the seat area
Its possible you damaged the new "O"rings when installing them
see if the tube feels loose.

I bet, if you start looking closely at the parts, you will spot the trouble areas.

Valves covers off and no half covers.

Yep it will pour oil out the head that is lower (based on which way the car is leaning). Engine running that oil is in the system not in the pan, (pan is just below the head push rod tube holes).

Especially if the filter isn't completely full.

Thanks guys . .

I had checked the tubes .. even bought two "new" ones from Clark's .. one of mine was badly indented from previous removal(s) with pliers (?) and the other had a badly out of round large end. All the tubes reset nicely with a "click" as the o-rings seated. I did check everything and all appeared tight.

On a side note .. about the tubes from Clark's .. one was about 1/4th full of carbon and the other was completely sealed?! I had purchased the "perfect" tubes which meant straight, cleaned, and no dimpling or scratches from pliers. WRONG!! Took me an hour + to dislodge the carbon filled one and then soak both overnight in solvent and use a flex hone to remove the remaining debris. Hard to believe someone had not even checked the insides before shipping them out?! Clark's .. after a couple of pointed emails .. did refund me the cost of one tube. First time in 2 years and many $$ spent with them - on my two car renovations - that I have had an issue with them.

Appreciate your thoughts/advice,
Dennis
