Early 4-speed transmission shifter seal...NOS?

Good day!
My local Corvair expert rebuilt an early 4-speed transmission that we just put into my customer's Rampside. Mike has been working on Corvairs professionally since the 60s. His work is top-notch. We are battling a shift shaft seal issue. He has an inventory of them. We are now on the second from his stock that leaks. I was thinking that maybe someone would have a NOS or Made in USA replacement that they would sell me? Mike is investigating same through his channels.
Let me know what you have.

THANKS VERY MUCH!

Enjoy the Corvair!

Are you sure there's not something else wrong I've been rebuilding early 4spd transmissions for years with gasket/seal sets from Clark's. I have never had an issue with them.

Both Mike and I have gone over it carefully and the leak is definitely at the shifter shaft. We cannot find any burrs or imperfections anywhere in the vicinity. There is no oil above the shaft exit that would run down onto the shaft. We are a bit stumped. I thought if I could find a different seal maybe he got a bad batch.

Thanks!

Enjoy the Corvair!

Are you using any sealer on the outside of the seal? You should use gasacinch or permatex type 2.

How are you passing it over the shifter pin holes? I put 2 wraps of scotch tape over them.

The Timken/National part number for the shift shaft seal is 472705 (Buna/nitrile rubber) or 472705V (Viton/fluoroelastomer). These come coated with the red "Redicoat" that should help seal the outside..

You guys have probably checked this already, but have you measured the diameter of the shift shaft where the seal rides vs an untouched area? Maybe there's enough wear that the lip doesn't contact well enough anymore.

Not sure what your Corvair mechanic has but Clark's offers a double lip seal for this application.

Good morning!
He did put Permatex around the outside of the seal before installation. Good idea of putting the tape around the hole in the shaft before installation.

I think his seals came from Clark's but cannot be sure. I have the old one here and it does look like a double lip seal.

Thanks for the input.

Enjoy the Corvair!
