Tim, I used to do that, too. But today's filters aren't built such that you can do that anymore.

Here's what I used to dig out the old stuck gasket:



Luckily, once I got a chip out, I was able to gently pull the rest of it down in one piece.

On my 66 A/C Convertible - the gaskets come out pretty easily when changed each oil change....significantly better than when it was not changed for many, many oil changes prior...
