Is this shift lever from an early model or late model? And how does one tell the difference?

That one is an early 4 spd shifter. The lates look dimilar but the sides are flattened. I think there is also a difference in the ball length from early to late.

Three spped shifters will be black.

The bottom of a late has a double ball end. One above the one.

The Clark’s diagrams look alike except for the bottom ball. But that is not easily seen, well, on my phone!
