My experience - IF... the Corvair mechanical fuel pump functions (internally) like a SBC mechanical pump, I would say less than 5 times in 100 electric fuel pump primes the fuel doesn't pass through the mechanical. Not sure why, maybe the internal positioning of the valves/diaphragm when the engine stopped? However, it was always easily rectified by a short rotation of the engine. With the cube style electric pump I never had a problem with the mechanical pump not pulling through it when it was turned off.

Just don't mount the electric pump very high. They push a whole lot better than they pull.

Never had that problem using the electric to push fuel through the Corvair mechanical pump.

Check valves are just in the fuel flow, nothing but fuel open them.

My Facet pump arrived yesterday. Have to go into town today to get a few different fittings so I can mount it into the back side of the cross member and bring the lines through holes drilled through the member. It is very tidy up in there and completely out of the way from getting knocked. Will report back once it is all installed and the car back on the ground.

My Lakewood's electric pump has no issue pumping through the mechanical pump. Like Frank said it just has check valves.

They are not strong check valves either. You can easily blow air through a mecanical pump with your mouth as a test as long as you don't blow the wrong direction. .

My interest would be in doing that and applying vacuum to the exit side of various electric pumps to see what your mechanical pump was going to have to deal with if you choose to run both.

If your Corvair was parked on a hill , front end up with a full tank, the gas would run through the pump by gravity if the carbs didn't stop it.
