What a sucker I am
Posted by: Murphy ()
Date: November 20, 2022 09:38AM

I recently posted that I was looking for a no-trim windshield gasket for my 61 coupe. I got a PM from this person telling me he knew someone that had one, and gave me contact info.
Thinking it originated here, I thought all was good. I went ahead and bought it from someone that doesn't exist. Out of some cash. Lesson learned.
Just be aware.

Below is the PM I received

As long as they didn't clean out your checking account or max your credit card...you got lucky.

Steele Rubber products offers the gasket for vehicles with the stainless trim.
Part Number 60-0503-50 with a posted price of $215.19 ea.

Metro Molded rubber products do not appear to offer these gaskets.
[metrommp.com]

Soff Seal does not appear to offer there either.
[rpui.com]

California Corvairs offers one for vehicles with the stainless trim.
[californiacorvairparts.com]
Part No. CC09024S $190.00 ea.

There is a vendor called Collectors Auto Supply.
[collectorsautosupply.com]

They advertise a Windshield gasket that fits ALL Corvair applications so my guess it is a generic "By the foot" product that may, or may not work.

Here is a cut and paste from their description:
1961-1964 Chevrolet Corvair Truck and Chevrolet Corvair Windshield Rubber Weatherstrip Seal Convertible Part Number WCR D616 ($113.97)

This weatherstrip will fit the Rampside, Loadside, Panel and Greenbrier models.
This windshield seal goes first on the body then the glass is placed in the opening.
A separate lockstrip (not included) inserts into the rubber and secures the glass in place.
Made from ozone resistant EPDM rubber and from the same OE specs as the original for an authentic fit and finish.

This rubber weatherstrip goes below the windshield and attaches to the opening before the glass is installed.

• Custom manufactured from ozone resistant EPDM rubber to exact OE specs
• When correctly installed, stops wind and rain from seeping into the interior
• Available for all popular models of classic and vintage cars and trucks
• Set it and forget it until you need to change the windshield again
• May include extra length to ensure easy installation

Be sure to double check the fitment section and ensure this part fits your vehicle.

NOTE: I did not find a listing for the "Lock Strip" that is needed, but not included.

Streang thing is that I also contacted Murphy about the gasket, since I had a call from Clarks asking if I might have a NOS one that they could use to make a reproduction from. Below is the text of the PM.

Quote

If you still have the original gasket in the parts car, I know that Cal Clark is looking for one to do an exact reproduction of this gasket. That way we will all have one if we need a new one. I just spoke to him this week and he asked if I might have one. Please let me know. thanks, Paul the junkman

Sorry, I don't have it.

I had 2 for the FC, one was a NOS that I purchased years ago from Lon Wall, and the other was a reproduction I am guessing since it had a 4 digit part number stenciled on the rubber. I sold them both to the same person along with some other parts. He was happy to get them both and I was happy that they found a new loving home. My goal it to rid myself of all Corvair parts and regain the space that they take up.

BonnyD put me in touch with Charles, too. Said he could help me with my search for ASSASSINATION OF THE CORVAIR book. Answers I got were not helpful, I asked for pictures, price and shipping charges, would not answer my questions. Glad I dodged that one!

A very good clue. Thought that it originated here I thought I was safe. As soon as I discovered that, I knew I was had.

A lesson learned.

You used the "Search" correctly,BUUUT, . . . . . . .
Just because they have not posted, does not mean they are not a member.
Using "Search" will only reveal any messages posted, not if a person is registered on CCF.

DUH…

I am old and easily confused, but you have to be signed in to send a PM. Unless there is a long term major bug in the software.

Maybe a moderator has access to the list of members?

Might send a PM to 1966-Corsa-GT-180. Dan Davis.

He seems to be overseeing the software change, maybe ha he has access or knows who does?

If anyone has access, it is Dan since he is the current CCF Administrator.

A easy way to handle this kind of issue is to ask them to send a email.
If other checks seem legitimate. Or doubt arrizes in your gut.
Without opening it, right click on the email in the email list, and look at properties.
Then click details.
Then look at the email source.
When that opens copy and paste the email address into Google search.
When that comes up several options exist o indentify veracity of the email.
It is them possible to go into safety oprions in your computer and block the email ISP.
By copying and pasting the IS address.
I do this all the time with trouble or repeated emails like asking for bogus political and other contributions
Hope this helps.

Murphy, and all interested.
Matt Nall did search and found bonnyD as a non-posting member
He then deleted the account.

Takes care of that one, but still be very cautious. Sounds like dishonest people have find that creating an account and using the PM is a stealth path to swindle someone.

I would report their e-mail to the provider as well, but that doesn't do much since it is a burner anyway, I'm sure.

If you paid digitally, contact the company you used and file a fraud complaint.
May get your money refunded.

I'm 77 and not broke, so it seems I am a target at least weekly from some form of scam. A few weeks ago I was in a deal with a member here when the OP just vanished, but the PMs remained. Matt looked into it, no real explanation, so I hung in there and it all worked out. It seems you need to be vigalent without going full paranoid. Stay alert guys

Don't forget, guys:

You can click on the name (in blue) of anyone who posts or PMs you, and see who they are, how many posts they have made, and when they joined. With some members, you can even see the last time they were active. It makes it easy to deduce how seriously involved and legit they are.
