'62 4 speed guts and '65 4 speed guts

Question. Can you take the entire '65 4 speed trans innards and put them in a 61' - '63 trans housing? Have a blown up '62 trans and I have to keep the housing (because it's in a Pontiac Tempest) and I have a good '65 Corvair trans. I know some of the '61-'63 and '64-'65 trans parts interchange, but I want to swap the whole guts if I can.

Most of them probably could be swapped. I think that you would have to use the '62 reverse idle because it is smaller than the '65 and the cases are set up for the different diameter idler gears. Being a Tempest can you use the '65 input shaft because the clutch gears go from 12 to 14 splines. If you have the parts take them apart and see if they fit.

Yeah, actually the '62 revers idle assembly was the source of the problem. In 61-63 the reverse activator head has a press in pin to move the lever back and forth. In mine, the press in pin fell out, which left the reverse idler gear free floating and it engaged while going forward. Tore up the idler gear, cluster, and 1-2 slider. Was hoping to go to the '65 reverse setup as the head did away with the press pin. I think I'm just gonna try and swap it all out and see where I run in to issues.....

know anyone with a Hollande Interchange catalog? I don't, but might be a fast way to see which gears are interchangeable into the Tempest.
Otherwise a hand search of the parts books might work. Just a thought that occurs to me. Good luck!

As I remember the reverse idler got larger in '64-'5 so it would not fit in case made for a smaller dia gear. You might be able to swap some of the reverse gear levers.

Rex is right about the reverse gear; the reverse gear is much larger and will not fit the early case. GM redesigned the case for 64-5 for that reason (larger gear).

I have never seen a good photo of an empty Pontiac case so it would be great if you could post a few. Does the front of the Corvair transmission case differ much from the Pontiac case? I know that there is a bearing adaptor bolted on the front for supporting the long, flexible driveshaft.

Is there a 12 splined end on the flexible shaft or is there a coupler? If it is 12 splined, you will have to use the 62 12 spline clutch gear and the 62 early style parts that were used in the old transmission. The other gears will not probably work if your clutch gear has to have 12 splines for the drive shaft.

Aside from the drive shaft issue, is there an external reason that you cannot use the later Corvair transmission case?

Having built a Tempest trans you cannot interchange gears. They are the same as the Corviar, almost. The Tempest counter gear has more metal in it but they are an early tooth profile same as the 61-3, 4 speed.

I used an early counter gear to replace a bad one in the trans and diff I built. Even used a new countergear shaft. The blockers are all early style.

I'll get some pics of the case before I sew it up. I actually thought of using the whole '65 if I could swap the front bearing / gear that accepts the rope shaft and if the front extension bolts up. Outer dimension is not a problem and I believe the output shaft to the diff may be the same...

As for the car it's pretty cool. It was ordered to go with the 4 cyl / 4 barrel motor, 3 speed on the floor (no 4 speeds until '62), and the optional 3.70 rear. Larry Claypool had an entire '62 4 speed 3.55 setup he gave me so I'm upgrading as the 3 speed is not a full synchro unit, and the 3.55 will be better for cruising. Car had sat since '87, just got it running again. All numbers matching.....

I recall the "half v8" 195 had a reputation for eating timing chains and I often would hear them thrashing away while idling at stop lights. Have there been any improvements to the parts in recent years to eliminate that?

The originals had the nylon cam gear and yeah it ate those. Interesting thing I didn't know is they all came with a timing chain tensioner built in, that was a nice surprise. I put in a double roller chain and the tensioner back in. Little Indians club says that's a permanent fix for the issue.
