I have An older flywheel in good id like to get it resurfaced And Balanced while. I have the drivetrain out. The History of this car tells me it was a bolted flywheel from Clark’s, as almost everything else has been from Clark’s. I see. Clark’s doesn’t take “bolted” flywheels for core value, so wondering if It’s worth resurfacing this one.

Possibly done by Dale Langsather (Dale Mfg).

I think he was doing them before Clark's?

Dave Palmer can probably tell which is which.

Dale only does harmonic balancers now.

If it is bolted and looks to be solid you could check with a local machine shop to see if they can do it.

I’ve had success with a bolted flywheel that a local hot rod machine shop surfaced and balanced for me and the cost was reasonable

Right, talk to your local machine shop for surfacing and balancing.

Do a ring test on the flywheel first.

Early = Flat or Late = Stepped flywheel?
The best machining is done with a bare flywheel face. Having the backing plate and center plate in place can distort machining the surface properly. People have done it and it may have worked OK, but there is a best procedure for the best results.

This picture is of a newly-resurfaced flywheel sent to me in January by a reputable Corvair parts business, resurfaced by a reputable machinist.

See the big crack in the hub? Glad I did before I installed it.
Yes, the crack is visible on the other side as well.

Why this flywheel core was not thoroughly vetted before it was resurfaced and bolted is something I can't answer.

Caveat Emptor- no one is infallible.

Did you contact the vendor and state what the problem was? Will or did they replace it?
You are right no one is perfect, I'll be the first to say that I make mistakes, I have posted many on this forum.

With that said it might also be just as cheap to get a bolted flywheel that is balanced.

I do that as part of my rebuild! As a matter of fact I go farther than most rebuilders do as I make sure the face is flat and true!

As you can see below even the backside is not true. This is even a machined surface!

And then even the face isn't totally true.

Then you have the finished face ready for bolting.

I too have a fixture that I made to BOLT center the flywheel. That term is even stated in the blueprint!

I have rebuilt/bolted/refinished many Corvair flywheels over the last 40 some years. I don't know how to post a link but I suggest you watch our clubs (CCE) flywheel video. On youtube it's called Corvair bolted flywheel process. It will give you an idea of whats involved in rebuilding a Corvair flywheel.
