Repairing structural rust?

Howdy. Last month I got my second Corvair, a 1969 Corvertible. I have since gotten it running and driven it from Wisconsin to Colorado. At first glance the body and interior look pretty great, but the undercarriage terrifies me. It was originally sold in Chicago and I bought it in Wisconsin, so one can confidently assume it's spent most of it's life in the salty midwest. What are some repairs I can do to be less afraid of my pretty little convertible snapping in half? The pinch weld crumbles if I barely touch it. I have already decided to only let one door be open at a time haha.

The first step is to carefully examine the rockers because those are the structural "backbone" of convertibles.

Hopefully, your convertible isn't Wisconsin swiss cheese...smiling smiley

Go to Clark's catalog and compare what sheet metal they offer versus what you need.

Probably should look at the front door pillars, also.

Then, you have a decision to make: Actual condition of the car versus your skill / money. And, desire.

People have replaced rockers and floor pans...

If the pinch welds are toast it is time to look for another car. You are looking at highly skilled major work.

Statue4 where are you in Colorado? I am in Golden a suburb west of Denver. I would offer to visit with you and look at your car sometime but I don't do body and paint. If rust is very bad I would be concerned over brake line quality too.

There is a good club here in Denver area and one in C/Springs too.

Go to www.corvairkid.com and rummage around until you find the pictures of his restoration of a 1966 Corsa convertible from Canada. He replaced a lot of the cowl parts along with both rocker panels. I have no idea what it cost, and even if I did, I am certain it would shock you into giving up on your car. Restoration work in a restoration shop is roughly about $100 per hour. Assuming that it takes 40 hours to replace the rocker panels, that is $4000! Then you will have to add to that figure the cost to have the correct rocker panels manufactured. Rust never sleeps, so you will have to constantly be after it until it is all remediated. I can see a complete restoration on a car such as yours costing $75,000 - $100,000.
