() Date: August 31, 2022 02:28PM Hey folks, I have a 63 Spyder, can't get a new belt between the crank pulley and the rear engine mount. I looked in the manual and could find nothing about it. Thanks for any help, Kevin Re: getting belt between crank pulley and rear mounting bracket Posted by:

() Date: August 31, 2022 02:38PM Can you take a picture of your crank pulley and mount? its kind of a tight fit even when the correct combination of pieces are used, and if it has a harmonic balancer on it, you will need to have a 1964 engine mount to clear the belt. ------------------------------------ Kevin Nash Friday Harbor Washington 63 Spyder, Daily driver, EFI read about my project here: [corvaircenter.com] first test start on EFI here:[www.youtube.com] first official EFI boost test here:[www.youtube.com] My new fan! () Date: September 01, 2022 07:05AM I misspoke, it is a harmonic balancer. Tried to load some pics but had trouble with that. I'll try again later when I get back Re: getting belt between crank pulley and rear mounting bracket Posted by:

() Date: September 01, 2022 08:09AM Yep, if you have a 63 Spyder, and stock 63 engine mount bracket, with a Harmonic Balancer....its not going to fit. You need a 64 (only) lower engine mount bracket - the part that bolts to the engine, and meets the bolt in the engine mount. Eric P. () Date: September 01, 2022 09:22AM You may need the rear mount too. The position of the stud is different from the 1960-63 mount. NOTE use of word "may" please best wishes, Steve Rear Engine Spec. () Date: September 01, 2022 10:15AM What Steve said!!! I'm pretty sure I used both the bottom mount that attaches to the engine and the top mount that bolts to the frame rail for a 64 when put a Harmonic balancer on my 63. I found out about the belt fit problem the same way!! NOTE use of word "may" please Yep, I forgot those parts - my only experience with this has been in an FC - which does not need a different engine mount (bolt). Eric P. () Date: September 01, 2022 12:31PM You can stack a couple of washer between the skid plate and the original motor mount bracket. The '64-'5 FC motor mount bracket is basically an early bracket with an offset. This offset is less than the thickness of the metal. The factory did not use a '64 car bracket on a '64-'5 FC. The '64 and later car motor mount brackets have enough room for a second pulley. You don't need that much room to change the belt with only the harmonic balancer. () Date: September 01, 2022 01:55PM Spacing the mount bracket away has been done but the amount of toe-in shims in the rear can be enough to run out of room with the slot at the top of the mount bract. Edit for spelling: mount bracket best wishes, Steve Rear Engine Spec. Inc. () Date: September 01, 2022 03:57PM I just realized you will need 64 mount cover and rear seal strip retainer for 1964 also. Your 63 parts are different. best wishes, Steve Rear Engine Spec. Inc. () Date: September 01, 2022 09:53PM The 64 motor mount cover has a bit of triangulation to it. Rather than a single strip all the way across to retain the perimeter seal it is 3 pieces. A 64 only engine mount bracket, 64 only rubber motor mount, 64 only motor mount cover and 64 only perimeter seal retainers can be a little hard to come by and pricey. It doesn't cost anything to remove the rear grille, motor mount cover and perimeter seal in order to access the motor mount bracket and try a washer or two under the bracket. You have to hold the engine up with a jack and you can try the fan belt before buttoning it all up. The single 63 perimeter seal retainer strip can be bent around that little bit. Of course buying all the parts and doing it right is better but not absolutely necessary. I suppose washers are a little hokey but there's a fair amount of them in service done that way. The 3/8 belt like you have fits down in the pulleys better too. Jim Brandberg Isanti, MN CorvairRepair.com ![]() Re: getting belt between crank pulley and rear mounting bracket Posted by:

() Date: September 01, 2022 11:41PM Cheaper to use the pulley instead of HB on 63 engine unless you stroked it. Must use HB with HP 164 motors. C.A. Rose Metairie, LA 1962 Spyders Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum. |
