petronix to xr700
Posted by: sirsparkalot ()

I currently have petronix 1 installed but its failed, so i bought the XR700 kit.
Question is, i do not have the original points plate available to me so could i connect the XR to the petronix plate?
It looks like it will fit, ive mocked it all up and clearance is ok, nothing rubs, but i dont want to fully button it down incase it fails.
iIm in the uk so cant pop out and get a points plate.

I would think you'd be okay doing that as long as it mounts securely to the plate and is the proper position to the reluctor wheel.

The distributor number is stamped on the side of the housing. All you need are the last three digits. For example 1110455, all you need is the 455 part because all Corvair distributors follow the pattern "1110xxx".

The distributor largely determines what the initial timing should be. If yours is a 455 distributor, unlike most smog distributors, its timing curve is identical to the 319 non-smog unit so you're good to go.

Initial timing with a 455 should be 12-degrees but I wouldn't hesitate to try 14-degrees, the initial timing found on the non-smog 319.

"Smog" carburetors are very good units and the most accurate of all Corvair carburetors. They're second only to the 65-6 power valve units which are less accurate but offer two stage main metering.

1110319 110 is the full number on the side of the distributor.

319 is the correct distributor for a 65-7 110 hp engine. It should work well on your engine too. Initial timing for that distributor is 14-degrees. You should run premium fuel on a 110. If it pings at 14-degrees, you can back it off to 12-degrees to avoid pinging.

Only have E10 unleaded which is 95 octane here in my bit of the uk, 14 degrees still recommended ?
many thanks for all your help guys.

Yes, 14-degrees is still a good place to start. Sorry you're stuck with E10. While it's fine for a frequently-driven vehicle, it tends to separate into fuel and water after it sits a while and our fuel systems corrode badly in that case.

So, XR700 is in timing is set to 14 carbs balanced.
took him out for a run, ran lovely for about 15 mins then started to stumble, had to keep knocking into neutral and keep the revs high to keep it running.

Car is 69 110 with pg running on E10 petrol with stabiliser additive electric fuel pump.

Got home this is what i tested and found:
Timing stayed at 14.
Checked witness marks on harmonic balancer, all good.
Checked shutter on XR700 to timing all good.
Coil not very hot (mounted on rear sheet metal) also new and unballasted so using ballast wire.
Good strong squirt of petrol on both carbs.
Plugs bit sooty (dry)

car would JUST tickover but very lumpy

So i tried the timing light on each of the plug wires in turn, right side (looking into engine) all good with healthy blink of light at distributor and at sparkplug end, but when i moved to the left bank i had healthy blinks from the timing light at the distributor but little or nothing at the sparkplug end of the wires. unfortunately i dont have any spare ht wires to test the car didnt really want to tick over for much longer.
Im thinking the plug wires are dying when the engine gets warm, as the car starts and ticks over perfect when stone cold, could this happen?

Any advice guys.

More likely the coil getting hot than the wires. Wires are a good guess, are you running resistance wires? Check with a meter. Left bank has longer runs than the right. If you have a known good coil, try swapping that first.

Coil is new, but tried another anyway, same problem. have ordered new set of plug wires, rotor and cap from Clarkes, ill let you know more when i get them.

On searching this problem it does seem a very common one on our cars.

I had a car come in on his trailer 18000 mile 69 previos work to bring it up to driving , all polution control stuff removed, tuned up and being driven , it started running poorly and the pump was leaking , when he got to me it wouldnt start we pushed it off the trailer I fixed the pump checked both carbs and ignition all was good still wouldnt start the spark plug cords looked new and were packard wires I put my timing light on it and couldnt get spark on any wire I then put my light on the coil wire and finally had spark , new wires on and it started right up and ran perfect . I think you have it figured out

Sounds like a fuel issue. May be a piece of trash holding a needle open and flooding one or both cabs. Do you see any fuel dripping into the throat of the carb when nits idling?

No fuel dripping, after a lot of tinkering including adjusting the valves, car is running ok but just not happy with the XR 700 running on the old petronix plate, so ive ordered a electronic distributor from California Corvair with 8mm leads.

Will report back when all installed.
