Flickering Lights.

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum I had been posting my issues and getting help on the corvairforum website but I am having log-in issues thought I would come here to see if I can get some help.

I have a 64 Monza 900 PG that I have been tinkering with the last year, replacing some seals, etc. rebuilding carbs, tune up and just giving it some TLC.

I finally have started driving it after finally getting it tuned right, but the lights are flickering (at low RPM). seems the battery is good and the Generator is charging at at about 15volts.

I have heard this need two grounds from the battery. I am not sure what the right way is. Currently, I have the possible original style uninsulated ground wire just grounded to the bottom bracket bolt on the generator as it showed on a diagram I saw, is this possibly my issue? just looking for some advice on where to go from here. Maybe I need a alternator upgrade?

Thanks in advance.

You need a ground to the body as well. On late models this is accomplished with small ground straps in the corners of the engine compartment.

Clark's catalog shows the strap you need.

On a late model it was handled by 12 gauge? wire from the battery negative terminal to the drivers frame rail. The braided ground wires on 3 of the corners of the engine are part of the radio package and used to help reduce radio noise.

I am assuming that's why there is hole in the middle of the ground cable where it can also be bolted to the frame?. When I got the car it was only attached to the bracket bolt on the engine cover behind the generator.
I am assuming it doesn't need a separate wire.

Thanks for the info.

Yes that is what that hole in the cable is for.

Connecting your car's body ground should help matters but I'll also mention it's normal for the voltage to fluctuate up and down as the voltage regulator cycles. On some cars this can be noticed because changing voltage causes the lights to cycle between slightly dimmer and slightly brighter.
