1962 4 speed grinding and leaking transaxle

Hey all!

I have a 1962 Corvair with a motor from a 1965 that I put in with a great deal of help from Caveman Pete and some of the great fellas at the Detroit chapter corvair club. Motor is running great but over the past day or two I’ve had some noticeable grinding when accelerating. It seems particularly bad in third gear when I’m really trying to get up to speed. I’ve noticed I have a drop or two of oil under the car every day and I suppose those add up. I can’t tell exactly where it’s coming from but I can see it’s running down to the driveshaft and dripping off of there. Am I safe just changing the transaxle oil for now or do I desperately need new seals or gaskets? Will it need to be taken out and rebuilt? What am I in store for? Any advice is certainly appreciated.

Sounds like transmission issues. Safest best would be to go through (inspect at least) the whole transaxle.
Short term, if you can find a good condition replacement transaxle from an honest seller, that would be the fastest route to keep it going down the road.

The simplest thing to do would be make sure it has gear oil in it. If it is really low fill it up and drive it. Then decide what needs to happen next, seals and gaskets or complete rebuild.

The DACC (Detroit Area Corvair Club) is a great group of folks who are also very helpful. I know this first hand.
I would be tempted to get a professional opinion from a Corvair specialist. I know Ken Hand is in that area and I
also know he knows his stuff. If you need parts I know he has lots.

One of the BEST Corvair Transaxle Specialists on the West Coast just gave an opinion.
Fill it with oil and drive it.
Depending on what noises you hear, you can decide what to do next.
If the noises all go away, then you are good.
If it is bad, it is already damaged and is going to need replaced, or rebuilt.

Probably should check the transmission AND the differential.
