If you are talking about the vent at the top of the front of the PG, the transmission is overfull.

What you are referring to is probably the vent tube at the top forward end of the trans.

If all of the normal things are correct the most un-obvious thing wrong is the torque converter.

There is an over-running clutch inside the torque converter, this becomes stuck. When this happens the torque converter is now just a fluid coupling and the fluid will overheat and get forced out the vent tube.

Ah, another Corvair owner "fix".

Normally, there is a "floating cap" over that outlet.

I and Ken Hand posted possible causes already.

That fix was before my time .

As stated for sure NOT an original Chevrolet part. Too many "monkeys" have worked on our beloved air cooled wonders thru the years.

The car runs fine otherwise .
What would be the symptoms if the torque converter is not working?
Thanks

Personally I would come up with the correct vent parts and install them. Then I would verify you have the correct amount of fluids (transmission and differential). Then I would recheck/monitor for leaks before condemning anything.
Where are you located?

There is an Ontario CORSA Chapter:

Might contact them / go to a meeting... Think they are somewhere around Toronto, but I do not really know.

I would not do anything with the vent tube right now until you find the problem. The trans should work find with what is there or with it missing completely. I would correct it after the problem is found.

When you get it fixed, he vent is a common part used on many GM automatic transmissions and differentials. Go to your local auto parts store and ask for the vent for a 68 Camaro powerglide transmission or differential.

The symptoms of a bad torque converter is just what is happening to you with fluid coming out the trans VENT hole.
Another symptom is the engine may run fine and drive fine but the car will be a little slow off the line, that is hard to really detect unless you have been around Corvairs for a long time and have driven many different ones.

I had the same issue years ago with my 65 Monza. The fix in my case was just what Ken mentioned. Replaced the TQ and all was fine for years.

You probably already know this but it never hurts to go back to the beginning. You need to check the fluid level with the engine running and warmed up is better since the fluid level grows. With your scenario I would run it at the Add Line not at the Full Line, if it gets too low it just won't go.
Having said that I would think you have a problem since no one would usually install a tube like that if they weren't having trouble.

Put in the correct vent and then let it leak down until it quits leaking. Forget the level on the stick if it functions properly. The level on the stick does not reflect the proper amount anyway. Early on, during my 50 years of ownership, that problem plagued me no end. Just make sure it is the vent and you have no other leaks.

Along the line of what Layton said I'm wondering if the dip stick is correct? If it is too short it could be overfilled.
