I'll promise you one thing, a steering box does not have near the stress that a CV Joint has. If it will work in a CV joint, it will work easily in a Steering box. Re: correct steering box oil Posted by:

() Date: May 26, 2022 05:23PM Basic street smarts would agree that the stress-levels are nowhere near the same. BUT, I am sure there are other aspects of engineering that us Common Street guys don't have a clue about. If GM, AND richard1 say we need to use something of a higher grade, then I will trust their word over that of a Shade-Tree Mechanic. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- WA. state, 1 mile south of the Canadian border, I am not at the end of the world, but you can see it from here. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Re: correct steering box oil Posted by:

Since I am a GM University Graduate, ASE Master Technician for 40 years and member of the GM only the best club, and was Service Director for a GM Dealership for 6 years and owned and operated a very successful independent Automotive repair business for over 40 years, I consider myself a step above shade tree Mechanic. I also he been using CV Joint grease in Corvair steering boxes as well as many other makes since the CV Joint became popular. Re: correct steering box oil Posted by:

Well, Richard did say it, but I have never seen any specs on GM steering box lube. When was the last time GM even offered steering box lube for sale? I've never seen it in 40 years. I am aware Studebaker International offers lube due to customers who did not know what to use in their boxes. Studebaker stopped selling cars back in 1966, so it understandable their lube was long off the shelves. ![]() Frank DuVal Fredericksburg, VA Re: correct steering box oil Posted by:

Craig replies: I think GM Steering Gear Lubricant went away about 15 years ago. At that time I did a Google & Ebay search and found some for sale at a GM dealer. I contacted that dealer and bought a few tubes for my various projects. Last time I saw some? About 5-minutes ago! () Date: May 28, 2022 04:20PM You all make far too much about which oil to use, especially in a steering box.
