Came to me with dropped intake seat cylinder #3.
Apparently the valve seat debris can get around.
Supermarket is my air cooled spaceship stash.
Using all used parts except for new gaskets.
Striper will rescue...using it's left over head.
Whom ever ID the blue struts gets a prize.
What vehicle I'm using it in is top secret.

I've seen equal debris damage in all three cylinders. This is easy fix. But another head you already have is the best repair!

Air cooled spaceship good used head left over from Striper ready to install.
Going out to breakfast in Gem then annealing used copper head gaskets.
Took 0.030 steel out of old head...really nice used 0.040 going back in.
Broke out acetylene torch and did leak checks...fixed a couple or so.

How deep are you going to go into the engine?
I took a similar approach to an 80HP in my Lakewood. However inside was total sludge so it all came apart. Bearings were to copper, cam nose pitted/lifters going concave. Got acceptable used main bearings for $30 and new rod bearings for $60. Clearances are around .0022. I was generously given a NOS 80HP cam but needed a new $55 gear (too bad, the old one was very decent) and got a set of Sig Erson SBC Lifters for $20. I honed the cylinders, knurled the pistons and got new $50 cast rings. Around $100 got me a gasket set from Rafee (where is he, he eluded that he would be back).
There were a lot of little odds and ends. Used $5 oil pump gears (I cracked mine trying to reverse the one on the shaft), $10 oil slinger (there was none present). The valves were lapped. I do a far more detailed method than just lapping but that is a story in itself. $16 for Viton valve seals when the Teflon ones I bought turned out to be a disaster. Thankfully my town has a free Toxic Material Re-Use program and a lot of what I used to clean (and clean and Clean and CLEAN) as well as assembly lube and such came from there. But in the end I'm still probably $350 into my version of a "Supermarket Bargain...," I'd better say Refurbishment rather that Rebuild.
Anyway, I wish you the best. Not sure of your motivation but for me I enjoy the "Mc Guyvering" process. Wringing that last drop of water out of the sponge. But then I don't see me putting 2,000 miles on the car the rest of my life.

Motor was running and driving just a short time ago.
Not doing anything to it except putting the head on it.
Bottom line is nothing gained nothing lost if it's a no go.
Much like motor motohead built for PhilSide... it still runs.
Still waiting on somebody to identify the blue struts above.

Ultimate in Mc Guyvering...notice the tow strap holding the buggy together.
That is me about 12 years old...I broke the frame earlier in the morning.
My Dad was the King of Mc Guyvering as evidenced by the second shot.
Circa 1970 south of San Filipe in Baja...surf fishing was really good.

Can't identify the struts but the second picture with your dad doing the FAST - Fish Fry those front wheels/hubcaps look like they are from another rear engined car - the Renault Dalphine, attached to some undiscernible sold I beam front axle.

Home made suicide leaf spring straight tube front axle.
We put two 1 1/2" SU's on the water cooled 4 cylinder.

Fish Fry shot was on Hot VW & Dune Buggies cover.

I'll use some new GM crush head gaskets rather.
Than the used annealed copper head gaskets.
