() Date: June 21, 2022 12:47PM If by engine compartment doors closed, you are referring to the thermostatically controlled doors at the back of the left and right lower shrouds, they should be wide open after the engine warms up, just a few minutes on a hot day. When they are closed, air that has been heated while cooling the engine is recirculated into the engine compartment, raising engine temperature. If you are referring to something else, my apology. () Date: June 21, 2022 07:18PM [ssl.corvair.com] [ssl.corvair.com] Mark, they are nearly identical. The flange and collar on the crossover is the big difference. The doughnut gasket and collar that slide over the LM inlet pipe are what make the difference. () Date: June 21, 2022 11:03PM And one more performance tip, get rid of the muffler! Run a straight pipe, or flex pipe to your tailpipe, fab a piece of steel to attach it to the stock muffler hanger, or one of the bolts that gonto the block. Two things will happen, you’ll get a little more boost, and it’ll sound very cool, not at all objectionable. And another plus? Since you’re probably not running it real hard, that extra noise will put a smile on your face. I’ve never heard the turbo on a stock Vair with the muffler on, but you definitely hear it without the muffler. Re: Turbo BOOST update ![]() Posted by:

() Date: June 24, 2022 08:22PM I'm glad it works for you, thats great. For me it sounded and felt louder with a loud pipe, but it didn't measure that way. Back in the sixties there were local drag strips all over the place. I drove my car with nearly reckless abandon. Things that I did at the strip that made a difference. Pin the heat doors closed, silicon the belt, run very high tire pressure. Run on a nearly empty tank with about 2 gallons of Sunoco 260 which allowed me disable the boost retard. I carried a gas can with me for the trip home. A big one was pull the converible weights. Muffler on or off didn't do much. With the stock YH the input is so limited the factory muffler has little affect. Go to a bigger carb and I'm sure it would make a difference. Noise is fine around town for me, but hours of highway it adds to fatigue. My job caused me to make countless trips between Bethlehem Pa and Dayton Oh, about 550 miles. My factory muffler rusted out so I put on a glass pack. I made it about half way to Dayton, had a headache, my nerves were shot, said to myself thats enough of this S**T and got a new factory muffler when I got home. () Date: June 24, 2022 10:17PM Yea... same here. I have had the muffler off a few times mostly for kicks and giggles and mostly what I noticed was that the low rpm power was worse. Although I'm sure it does something at higher boost levels, having the muffler off sure doesnt hold a candle compared to getting rid of intake restrictions and doing something real about the awful stock distributor curve. On my car, it was way too loud for me with the muffler off for no real gain. ------------------------------------ Kevin Nash Friday Harbor Washington 63 Spyder, Daily driver, EFI read about my project here: [corvaircenter.com] first test start on EFI here:[www.youtube.com] first official EFI boost test here:[www.youtube.com] My new fan! () Date: June 28, 2022 04:47PM I would think that you might be able to flare the early crossover pipe to use the late style clamp and packing. Lay the back side of the pipe against a vice and then use a ball-peen hammer to flare it out. Measure and mark the pipe and then go slow. () Date: July 30, 2022 09:37AM Over 1000 miles on the Steve Goodman carb and turbo and it runs better every time I drive it. Although i haven't done an exhaustleak test lately, I'm guessing that the last sealer I put on the exhaust connection has set up because I can now get boost on 2nd gear and get more boost in upper gears.
