NEW LM Engine To Body Seal Install?
Posted by: aj_ed ()

Hi, I've had a new seal for about a year now, so I decided to install it. Instructions say to install seal lip in all strip pieces to rubber first, then install screws loosely. This doesn't work. Everything falls apart. Should I use adheisive in the strips, and hope the holes line up? What are your experiences, and tips?

BTW engine is installed.

Not the way I did it with a NOS seal.

Installed the seal to the engine sheet metal first

Then, install the metal retainers / lip to the frame rail.

You need to be careful as it is easy to "stretch" the lip /seal out of the best position.

Cannot remember if I did the corners first.

Also, need to be careful not to "stretch" the seal in the corners when installing to the engine sheet metal.

Put the long retainer on the firewall at the front of the engine first. The two ends should meet together just to the left of the oil filter. It will take several attempts to get it right so don't get discouraged. Just swear and start over.

What RobertC said.

Especially fun if its a turbo.

By the way, the factory used speed nut clips in certain locations to hold the seal in the retainer during assembly. See the assembly manual. Probably done to reduce the suicide rate of the poor guys who had this job on the line.

3 hours later, and some sweating, and swearing, I got the front and sides done. The 2 front corners were a bear. Going to take a break before tackling the rear.

Flat_six I did notice 2 speed clips, but I couldn't see a reason for them, so I removed them.

I couldn't imagine doing this on a daily job.

Do not recall speed clips - at least not what I call them. Do recall staples.

On both my 65's, the original engine seal lips were stapled to the metal retainer strips. My assumption was to make it easy to install. I had to remove the staples to separate the metal retainer strips.

BTW, the "split" was positioned at the middle front of the engine compartment.

There was a piece of tape that covered the joint. Think there was a screw holding the tape to the front of the frame, but memory is getting feeble...

OP has a 65 so this would be the correct installation:

Both of my 65's are LOS, so maybe that is the difference?

Could very well be. Although they were supposed to all work to the same book. Who knows? Would be interesting to find out.
