65 Monza died last night - electrical problem?
Posted by: Paulsgt ()
Date: April 27, 2022 06:37AM

Did an engine swap in by 65 Monza convertible, had engine running dialed in pretty well, she was idling nice and sounded good! Drove it around from my back garage to my front driveway and was sitting in it getting ready to take it for a "maiden voyage". I've probably run it a total of an hour+ since the swap, just had not driven it. Anyway, it died in the driveway and won't restart. Plenty of fuel in the carbs but does not appear to be any spark. I didn't change anything in the wiring. I swapped in a different (believed to be good) coil and it didn't make any difference. I do run an Ignitor I that has been in it for years. What are some ideas on what's going on?

THANKS!

Enjoy the Corvair!

Sorry to hear, Paul.

Did you test the coil with a meter before you swapped it, or test the 'other' coil?

Double check engine connector? Do you have tail and back up lights is quick check? But final confirmation is not done until you check red wire from battery to body harness side of harnesses.

Eric, I'm not sure of the process to check the coil. They are both flame-Thrower coils.

Thanks!

Remove the distributor cap and check the rotor.

I've had a couple break before. Good idea to carry a spare.

I did measure voltage at the coil with the ignition "on" and my meter read 6V. That didn't seem right to me but I couldn't check it with the key in the "Start" position.

6 volts is good for factory system as it is running through a resistance wire in the switch ON position. Battery voltage when cranking. PROVIDED you are still running points and GM factory coil. If not, it will be best guesses util you provide more details on ignition system and how it is wired in.

but if you have points, do points open and close with crank cycle? Is wiring good from points to coil.

FlameThrower what coil? I or II? What is part number on each coil.

Here is a link to check those coils.

Thanks Lane66 and Tom!
My next move was to replace the ignitor. I have one I bought for the Rampy engine (won't need it for a while). I think I also have the Ignitor II but I have not had good luck with those on a PG setup.

Paul,
A long shot, but easy to check.
I had two instances when an engine just stopped and would not start. Fuel was fine. Ignition was fine. Engine turned over just fine. Solution.....
I'm covering 50 years of Corvair's here, but these two problems were the same. Aftermarket cast cam gears just shattered. Engines were low performance connected to PG Transmissions. So no abuse.
So, may I suggest a quick compression check in your diagnosis. Sure it may be a long shot, but it took me quite a while messing with fuel and electrical before i found the first one.

Hi Dave,
In my horror, I thought of what you suggest. I will check that if swapping the Ingnitor does not do the trick. Thanks!

Enjoy the Corvair!

With the key on run a jumper wire from the battery to the purple wire that is two wire connector and see if there is a spark.

Put points & condenser in and see if it starts up

Cor operation: Pertronix I is only unit that works with PG tranny. Pertronix I or II for manual tranny.

Paul - Same recommendation as FLSteve, but run a jumper direct from the battery to the coil positive side. Then crank it. If it starts, the problem is in your electrical system. If it doesn't, it is the Pertronix or the coil.

You need to figure out which coil you have before swapping the Ignitor. You can burn up the Ignitor with the wrong coil.

You can run into trouble not running the proper coil. I believe Clarks recommendations in the catalog chart are correct.
John and Vince had trouble coming back from a convention in southern Iowa. The parts were mis-matched and had been for years, just all of a sudden gave up the ghost on the freeway.
Someone had hooked a fuel pump to the ignition wire and I don't think that helped the situation either.

I've been running the same coil and pertronix in that car for probably at least 15 years. (I don't put a ton of miles on it) The only thing different is it's connected to a different engine. Now, I'm not saying it hasn't failed. I'll let everyone know in a couple of days when I figure it out. In the mean time, keep those ideas coming.

Enjoy the Corvair!

Red or Black Pertronix? Nice to have info to help troubleshoot. Part number of coil also.

So do we know if it is a engine cranks and doesn't fire or that the engine doesn't crank?
