Non Corvair YH Carbs
Posted by: Edwin Buiter ()

Is there any use or value for the non Corvair YH carburetors? I have a carb with casting number 1036, which seems to be for Nash's. Would be happy to sell if anyone is interested. Will get pictures tomorrow.

Wolfe rebuilds YH carbs for other than the Corvairs. He might be interested.

It could be from a Nash. The '53 to '55 Corvette 6cyl's had a manual choke. Yours has an automatic choke.

I found a 1036 when looking through stuff today. I Googled "Carter YH 1036" and came across a thread here many years ago that talked about it being for a Ford Y Block whatever that is.

Y block Ford is 272/292/312 v8 beginning in 1954. The YH was used on 312ci onboard marine engines. They are referred to as 'Dearborn' engines

I should know that, I had a 292 in a 61 Ford 1 ton in the 70s. My buddy bought it for a spare with a Thunderbird.
I must have had an accelerator pump for a 1036 or something as it didn't fit Corvair, I finally threw it away a few year ago.

You opened the door, Jim, so here are a couple pictures of a Y block Ford. I'm afraid my flash obscured the placard, which may have identified the side draft carbs on an unfamiliar intake. Now it's your job to identify them. And Phil, since you're an inliner, here's a hot rodded Buick 8, which I'm guessing is running 2 barrel Holleys. All photos were taken fall of '20 at the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing in York Springs, Pa. Couple of Corvair clubs held their fall meet there. Fantastic museum, great place for a meet!

On the Ford V-8 the opposing YHs into a branched plenum into side plenums is interesting. I wonder what's going on in there as far as airflow is concerned. I wonder what happens when you either open or close the throttle plates, must be sort of a gradual emptying and filling of the plenums which would be okay in a boat but maybe not so much when road racing.

On the Buick straight-8 I wonder if there's a plenum all the way along or if each carburetor is truly only servicing two cylinders. Synchronize much?
The exhaust side sure is a straight shot. Run them babies right out through side port holes and stand back?
The piece of flat stock for the throttles is interesting.
There's 3 different kinds of carburetor inlet fittings. Of course at the races you often fix with what you can find.
Early fuel rails?

Looks like a fascinating museum.

Factory Nash YH. It is a 1036. Same guy had a nash with dual YH's but I didn't get a good picture.

Mine looks like it has the ported vacuum but the screw is pretty tight in there.

That's a 268 ci. Pontiac 8 in a Pontiac concept show car in 1954?. Sort of Pontiac's version of the first Corvette.
Talk about over carbureted !! That old flathead couldn't pump enough air to need even two YH carbs!

Edwin,
Here's the Wikipedia article on the Nash - Healey sports car. There's a good picture of the dual carb version contained therein.

Here is a 1954 Nash-Healey Le Mans Coupe I had the pleasure of working on! One of only 90! It is at the Peterson Museum in Los Angeles. That is a Rambler 6 as factory delivered!
