Scatter shield for Corvair flywheel.

Has anybody out there built or tried to build a 360 degree, 1/4 inch steel scatter shield for a Corvair bell housing? This item is now mandatory to run at Bonneville and as far as I know, nobody makes one.

I went round and round with the Chief Automobile Inspector on this subject.

I had been using an RCI PG ballistic blanket for twenty years with no squawks.

Then all of a sudden that inspectors said it had to be the 1/4" steel plate.

Ended up going over his head and having the SCTA Car Chair okay a blanket.

I was required to have DJ Safety build an exact copy of the RCI PG blanket.

DW and I both have the email chain to support using the ballistic blanket.

The point of it is...there is no specific scatter shield available for Corvairs.

So using a universal big car PG blanket that fits has already been approved.

Yes that same inspector is the same person Robert is dealing with right now.

It is pretty clear that fella has some kind of a resentment against Corvairs.

Phil, Thanks for the update. The chief inspector now is a New Zealander named Steve Davies and yes, he is a Ralph Nader fan. (I guess he hasn't seen my video.)
Is it possible DJ Safety can make another custom blanket? Do you have a part no?
Thanks

Sent you P/M's...we need to see the 2022 rule book.

No surprise if the 1/4" steel plate rule was reinforced.

I need to order the 2022 rule book anyway...manana.

I think its a stupid rule if theres one that works already, however, if the prick just HAS to have his way... I think a reasonable way to make that scatter shield would be to use cardboard and duct tape to make flat patterns, with the idea to make a octagon (8 sided) around the bellhousing. Yes its a @#$%&, yes that prick inspector shouldnt be working, but if thats what it takes to go racing, I think thats how I would do it.

If the old rule was there for over 20 years, and it technically hasn't been rescinded, or at least announced, then how can any new-guy inspector change it? Seems he doesn't have that authority if folks can go over his head.

Geez.

Isn't the sole purpose of a scatter shield to protect the driver's feet and legs from being impaled or cut-off when the flywheel or pressure plate explodes?
With the Corvair flywheel being located about 6 feet behind the driver, it makes no common sense why a blanket would not suffice in this application. Just sayin...

Regan, You are correct. On a front engine car, the scatter shield is a safety issue. On this Corvair, there is a steel cage that will support the motor if the bell housing fails. The only remaining issue is the pieces of shrapnel that would litter the course and would have to be cleaned up to protect other cars from tire damage. I think a blanket would take care of that problem to a great extent.

Just curious if there might still be any old Air Cooled rear engine Volkswagens running at these events any longer.

IF there are, is this individual's interpretation of the ruled being enforced for them?

Maybe this individual is actually Scatterbrained and someone should wrap a blanket around his head.confused smiley

There is a ballistic blanket designed specifically for VW transaxles available.

If you submit a rule change form by Sept 1st it will be voted on by the Rule Change Committee.

It's just that simple and if passed will be included in the next years rulebook...safety is paramount.

We know the rule change process because Dwight and I still can't get SCTA to

implement F/CPS category which is where stock turbocharged Corvairs land.

For some unknown reason (politics) they stopped at E/CPS which is 3-4 liter.

Real racers out there love our car but the people in charge have Nader issues.

All of the people in charge started out as real racers then forgot about that.

I don't suppose any amount of real logic will help? Like waving the 1972 report and the Yenko SCCA title in their faces? Or pointing out the Goodyear use of a Yenko to test tires, or the Electrovair, or John Player Racing, or even a Vairy8 Hot Wheel. Anything?

Guilt tripping them in any fashion is a waste of time.

Phil, We bought a blanket from Jegs that doesn't work--it's 12 inches wide and about 8 inches too short. The straps don't reach the buckles and there's no way to protect it from the turbo crossover pipe.
Do you have a source for the RCI or FASTTIME blankets? I like the VW blanket--it looks like it would fit if it's long enough. The bump for the clutch release arm really makes it difficult.
Thanks for your help.
