REPORTS!! Corvair Corral Estate Sale in Apache Junction, AZ. May 14-15
Posted by: azdave ()
Date: April 12, 2022 05:35AM

John Seaman, of the Arizona Corvair Corral, passed away last weekend. His property was already sold and John was preparing for a big auction on April 30th because the property had to be vacated soon. John's daughter is continuing with the auction as planned.

John had a Wayne 100 a few weeks ago but don't know if it is still there. He was doing some advanced sales prior to the planned auction before he passed away suddenly last Saturday. See link below for an overview. They are taking offers to purchase the entire estate.

Kind of a shame as many of these "dry" parts could have been put to good use.
And now are likely to be scrapped.

It is clear that John was a huge Corvair fan as well as one who appreciated Star Wars and Hot Wheels. A man after my own heart! I wish I had met him.

I am sorry for his family's loss. May the sale go well for his daughter.

Boy such a shame for the family and all those parts. I hope they can find a home for all that in honor of him. He definitely loved corvairs. I just wish I could walk through all that.

The Dream: This assemblage of parts could be used to put together as many Corvairs as possible. Perhaps through a trade school, a prison program etc.

The Reality: This assemblage of parts once was complete Corvairs. Someone saw more value and/or purpose in disassembling them. If there was a demand for these parts (most of them) they would have already been sold. Those who carry the greater interest in these types of cars are growing old and dying off. While interest does exist among younger people it isn't what this generation has.

Epilogue: It isn't just here. Pretty much across the broad spectrum of collector cars the same thing is happening. Over in my Studebaker world the average age seems to be 70-80. There are people with hoards of parts. Every month a few die off and the same thing occurs. Everyone laments that the parts are going to China to return to our shores as marginally reliable appliances.

Advice: Sell what you know you will never use at very reasonable prices. Don't think that 'someday this might be worth... .' It takes a special person to be willing to take a borderline car and attempt to bring it back to life. That person likely has more skills and passion than money. Too often I see a part someone would have paid $10 for get scrapped because the owner just wasn't going to let it go for less than $30. In the end it winds up selling for pennies to a scrapper.

Dave,
It's not fair to put you in the middle, but at this point, you're my only point of contact. I called the number for Graystone auctions as listed 816 560 5681, but got the voicemail for what sounded like a private individual. When I hung up, my phone told me the call had been routed to Missouri. I looked on-line and the area code for Apache Junction is 480, so I'm at a loss to understand. I had hoped to find out if there were days before the auction where a person could inspect for items on which they wished to bid, then ask you for a name of a person that might be willing to act as my proxy. Still hoping to find a RZ code engine or case.

Never clear to me if John took over for Charlie Dye, or if they were separate "collections". This would truly be the end of an era if the parts were commingled.

Update to my above post. Clicking on Dave's link, then choosing "Company Details", there is another different phone number - 623 670 6243. Tried that number, another voice mail, still waiting for a response.

Do not know how they can sell (move) all that stuff in 1 day?

A bunch of front loaders and 20 semis?

Sad.

Another update, just got a return call from one of the company associates. He said because of John's sudden death the auction had been moved to May 14, and may be expanded to two days. For confirmation, and more information, call Shannon McQuerry 816 560 5681. The caller said the property would be opened for inspection before the auction, but wouldn't commit to a time or date - call Shannon and he will help you.

The auctioneer is named Shannon and I talked to him yesterday. His number is correct 816-560-5681. I'm sure he is dealing with many calls and trying to arrange the auction details. he was also having website difficulties so it may have crashed. I know the link has worked for some people earlier today so maybe try again later or I'll see what I can find out.

The auction is the remnants of Charlie Dyes parts which John acquired from Charlie many years ago. John also had his own stash or parts from him and his dad. Not that long ago, John also added a bunch more stock from an individual in eastern Arizona that had 20-30 Corvairs and a huge parts stash as well.

The auctioneer said anyone buying a substantial amount of items would be given 3-5 days to move the purchases off the property.

I see the date was just moved to May 14th. More details as they emerge.

Sad to hear of John's passing. He certainly was not very old but I also know health knows no age. A lot of this was Charlie Dye's stuff. Coincidence, CD was just mentioned in the current Communique.

Honestly something like that needs to be given to corvair businesses I feel. No one person needs all that at one time. That’s just my thoughts.

Everyone wants a few rare items and the NOS stuff of course. If the owners were to give away the rest, I doubt anyone would pay to haul it to a new location. Just the way it works these days. These are Corvair parts, not Corvette or Camaro.

Not many businesses can (or want to) handle that much stuff.

Without free labor, it would probably cost $5000. to move all that 10 miles.

Then, you got 6 months to sort and organize it.

The auction site I listed up top is working again and it confirms the date has moved to May 14 and is now a 2-day sale with May 15th added. May 13th is the preview date.

As an aside, Charlie Dye was John's former father in law. John had taken Charlie in when he became unable to live on his own. So Charlie was living with John in his (or both of their) final days...
