I know there was someone years ago who was working on using a Subaru engine/drivetrain to transplant into a Corvair.
I lost track of that project; it seems he just disappeared.

Is a transplant economically viable?

Backstory: My wife totaled her 2020 Subaru Forester 2.5L. It was T-boned on the driver's side center.
I suppose that I have a chance to buy it back. With only 22K miles, I am considering options.
It is beyond my skillset, so I would have to pay to have it done.

You would need the reverse Ring and pinion from Subaru Gears. The amount of labor would make paying a shop to do the work...would be the deciding factor!

The blue late model that was at the 2014 Tacoma Convention had the Subaru engine and I believe the Subaru transaxle in the back seat so there was no need to reverse anything.

Didn't the SVX only come with an automatic transaxle? Any stick box bolt up to it?

A 2020 Subaru drivetrain is so intertwined with all the safety systems including Eyesight and such, there would have to be much work done on the electronics of that sort of swap. Not saying it couldn't be done.

I kind of figured that, Paul. When purchasing the Subaru, I was largely unimpressed by all the "safety" and tech gadgets. I can say that I was surely glad that that was the car that my wife was in when hit. She came away with a broken rib and bumps and bruises. If it happened in a Corvair......... she probably wouldn't be here today.


Soon I will be purchasing our fifth new Subaru since 2020. Three Foresters, one Crosstrek, and a Legacy (that I couldn't stand because of the dash layout and controls; too distracting).

Subaru SVX manual swaps were done fairly often. This one is out of a 92 which was considered OBD1 it might not care there isn’t a automatic transmission attached.
