Wild for a Wagon grinning smiley
Posted by: toms73novass ()

I picked up a relatively rust free 62 wagon.

I have wanted one for quite some time and a nice solid body was a must. Want no part of doing what I did with my 63 Spyder.

There will need to be a touch of metal work in the rear quarter. I believe mostly due to battery acid/vapors. But relatively minor.

I plan on pulling and going through the power train, not going to even try and start it. Id does have it's original 102 hp wagon engine and 4 speed trans.

Will need full interior, but I would have done that more than likely anyway.

Here is something I have never seen in the wild. Horn covers. Every car or parts car has had them dissolved into nothing or they were missing.

Already blasted and power coated.

I absolutely love wagons. Been giving my long term wagon project some love the last few weeks. I think at this point as much as I like convertibles if I could have just one corvair a wagon might be it.

Looks like you got a great start on one. I can't wait to see what you do with it Tom, it will be a stunner.

Edit to say it's incredible to see the solid front floors. Even my dry New Mexico original paint solid wagon needed floors. thumbs up

Yes, quite surprised how solid it is. When I strip it down to bare metal I'll know more but it looks quite promising.

Tom, how cool. You are going to love a wagon. Is it a Monza?

Tom I worked for 'papa Joe' Luby in 1962-3 when I was stationed here at Lowry AFB. Have you found early receipts? I probably wouldn't know the owner however because the line mechanics didn't get to visit with the customers very often.

Nice car to start a project with too!!

Some one at some point put some monza trim on it. It actually is a 700.

I have not found any original paperwork. It was last titled in Tennessee in the 80's.

This car was built in 11/61, it would be funny if you caught a glimpse of it way back then.

I do plan on trying to save the Luby badge. It is quite well made. It is amazing how these cars find their way around!

Welcome - Wagon. I just looked at my Lakewood and sure enough it has those horn covers too. Originally a Michigan car from '61 to '73 the story goes it was driven to California..., and then parked. It was "gifted" to me in '95. Still parked but it is in the process of being given a new life. All the best in this venture.

The 62 Monza wagon I built an engine for had the horn covers as well. It was no easy chore to remove the rusted fasteners to get to the horns. Working on that car made me want to own a wagon as well. Really cool cars that get a lot of attention in the public. Hopefully your windshield is good as the wagon has its own glass.

I am considering painting it this color GJ0 Rally Green Metallic with possibly white roof or a single white stripe down hood - roof.

Lowered at least 2" in front with some eye catching rims.

I think I might go in a different direction and paint with with blue accents and single blue racing stripe.

Almost a cross between these two, but not as low maybe an inch higher than the coupe.

Thanks Chad.

Just trying to nail down a plan so I can head in the right direction instead of circles.

If I know the overall color, I can start spraying smaller parts the appropriate color such as hinges, jams etc. and be prepared for the outside overall painting in the summer.

I like the color also, my concern I cant visualize the whole car in the color and also it is about $1000 for a gallon of color!!! $400 a quart.

Small update:

Start to strip down car, taking out windows and hardware.

Using rust 911 to remove surface rust before painting.

Window track had surface rust, totally gone with 911.

Hardware painted with Steelit paint.
