Odd number on turbo engine
Posted by: jfreez ()

I finally got a correct late model turbo engine for my 65 Corsa. Looking at the block number I see something that's a little strange.
It shows T020IRL
I don't understand why there is an "I" at the end of that should be the date digits

Do you have pictures? Sometimes the block gets double stamped.

Not really an odd number, it's an odd character. Someone used an "I" instead of a "1"

Corvair engine code:
T = factory (Tonowanda)

NNNN = month and day. 0201 = February 1st.

LL = engine assembly code. RL = 65&66 180hp turbocharged 164 cubic inch

thats the answer I was hoping to hear.
next step is to start tearing it down and figuring out how in depth I want to get with this rebuild. once I get the heads off, I should know a lot more,

The "I" was used for a 1 on ALL Tonowanda engines.

While it may be a normal number, there is some double stamping going on there.
When you look closer.

Off of WHAT ? ? ? confused smiley

Looks to me like the dies were set too far to the left, and someone noticed it just as they were beginning to strike it.
It barely got tapped, they re-centered on the exposed part of the block, and then gave it a solid strike.

Do a pencil tracing once the block is cleaned, and the top shroud is removed. That should show what is going on more clearly.

The faint I and R are shifted to the left straddling the zero
