Coker Whitewalls on Rampside
Posted by: Eido ()

Thinking of picking up these Cker whitewalls for the Rampside.

A bit pricey, but I saw someone post a picture of their Rampside with them some years ago. Anyone else running them? Any comments, positive or negative//

Thanks!

I installed a set of Classics on my Chevrolet about 4 years ago, and this past spring, I noticed that they are developing tiny radial cracks in the white wall of the tires. They don't have a lot of miles on them, nor do I keep the car in the sun, but they are still showing aging. I can't fault them on any other level, except for the cracks in the whitewalls.

Thank junkman. I’ve heard similar issues on tires Coker makes for the Model T.

I had to return the first set of "whitewalls" to Coker, because of the serious discoloration that quickly developed. The replacements have been better but not great.

What cause the discoloration? Any idea?

As they’ve grown, I know Coker has had quality control issues.

I prefer the thinner whitewalls. A LOT cheaper too and better tires!

Thanks but I don’t like the thin white walls. I’d rather go to black walls at that point.

I see that Diamondback Tires makes a similar whitewall. I’d probably go that route over Coker.

It will also be a lot more expensive. Diamondback starts with a production black wall tire, and then adds the white to the black rubber. They have a premium look, at a premium price.

Actually the 195/75R14 Diamondback I whitewalls are cheaper than the similar Cokers even factoring in S&H.

I'm not much for wide whitewalls especially on a truck but that's just me.

Discoloration comes from:
Ozone
Outgassing of the rubber compounds
Sulfur Bloom
Chemicals used to 'whiten' the whitewall.

Most good radials that have raised white lettering can be buffed out to wide whites ... same for tires that had the skinny white band. lowrider shops have been doing it forever.

I prefer the simplicity of the blackwall when the wheel is really the focus. It all depends on the color of the FC and the design of the wheel.

The silvertown radial BFG from Coker was perfect on my 1960 speedometer... if that helps make up your mind.
