A little further reading indicates it doesn't have a VIN tag number...not good.

I think "REAL UGLY", might be an understatement! eye popping smiley
But, that being said, I would still love to have it, just for the uniqueness it represents. cool smiley

At least the video proves it moved under its own power. That gives them one-up on the infamous Nikola video of a truck coasting down a hill. grinning smiley

I don't think it will sell unless the price at least doubles.
I think the family believes it is more than it is..

Yes, from reading the text of the article and the comments, it gives the impression that they think the Mayan is worth a LOT of money.
After all, the builder was a Science Fiction Author, and the Ocelot once had a racing history. eye rolling smiley

What value it currently has is derived from having Porsche brake drums and a Porsche transaxle. Those are high dollar, expensive parts.

Other than that, it doesn't look safe to drive and would cost a fortune to get it to the point where it would be usable and presentable.

Looks presentable to me.

Safe to drive: are you applying modern safety features to a vehicle custom built 50 years ago?

No, I would not want to drive it across country. But, it should make it to local car shows just fine.

Basically, it is a one off version of any number of Corvair powered kit cars of the era - based on the same pan / suspension components available at the time.

Of course, the question is how does it handle? Just need a lot of empty space to find out.

Safe? Of course it is. Didn't you read the Road & Track article, posted in the +42 extra pictures? They reported that this incredibly butt-ugly POS reached a breath taking speed of 85 MPH.
Incredible as it would seem, there was a previous prototype to this pile that had a shorter 82" wheelbase. Just as ugly. Just as sad.

Let's see:

Poorly constructed out of who knows what?

Lacks a rear window - so you can always tell if the mixture is right on the engine as you will be breathing the exhaust.

Cracks in the poorly designed body everywhere, missing screws or were they pop rivets?

Engine and trans held up by four small screws.

Has it been sitting outside in the Oregon rain for fifty years?

Laughable drive video...

Need I go on?

Yes, PLEASE do go on.
I have yet to see you make any valid point yet.

Hater will always hate. eye rolling smiley

If you take the time to look at the pictures more closely, you will notice that there is a rear deck-lid/engine cover built into the rear body section that lifts up.
Anybody with working eyesight could tell you that it is quite obvious that this vehicle has NOT spent the last fifty years sitting out in Oregon rain.
Or even ONE SINGLE year out in OREGON RAIN.

I think it would be an adventure to do a coast to coast trip in that little buggy. grinning smiley

LOL If it spent 3 - 5 years outside in Oregon rain, it would look like a chia pet. Inside and out.

The real question is how many miles are on the vehicle? The seller and heirs are notably vague on the issue. Speedo / odo is 68,000 miles? Obviously, the vehicle had to pass whatever regulations at the time (1965) at the Oregon DMV(?) to be registered as road worthy.

So, was a used dash / odo tossed in? Or, was the actual odometer reading at DMV certification zero miles?

I agree: the "road" test is lame.

The "struts" are questionable - to isolate rotational vibration? But, I do not think they are really structural. But, I am not an engineer.

Safety (60's version) is relative. But, this is really no different from the many kit cars / dune buggies from the era. Is a 60's Ford Cobra really safe?

Matter of perspective.
