Carb Kit Recommendation?
Posted by: PGVair ()
Date: August 28, 2021 05:58PM

I'd like to see if anyone can recommend which carb kits from our Corvair vendors work good with ethanol laced gas. So which kits have gaskets, accelerator pump cups and other parts that hold up well to ethanol.

Thanks,
Wade

John Sweet sells a kit with proper needle and seat and viton accelerator pump.

California Corvair sells the Viton accelerator pump cups (blue).

I took apart the carburetors on both my 140HP cars. I had gone through them using Clark's kits five years ago and the accelerator pump cups had finally quit. In half the carburetors I found black particles in the float bowls that appeared to be from the top to bottom gaskets which had "frayed" around the edges!

I was installing the new Viton accelerator cups from Califronia Corvair and ordered the top to bottom gaskets from them. Much nicer gasket, hard gray material with nice clean sharp edges. They also don't "weep". Just my experience.

As far as the float needle valve tip goes --- I've never had an issue with them using ethanol blended fuels. BTW --- MAKE SURE YOUR FUEL HOSE is ethanol rated as some ARE NOT (hard to believe now). I've had great luck with Gates "Barricade" fuel hose. Comes in high or low pressure rating.

Other than the top to bowl gasket the Clark's kits are well done, but I'm not sure if they are using the new "Viton" accelerator cups.

I was going to suggest Raffee, as I bought in bulk from him over the years, but he is now moving and no longer has stock for sale.

I've bought the Viton pump cups (blue) from John Sweet. I think Clarks and California Corvairs both have proper kits with Viton cups for sale now.

Most times I just use the basic (gaskets with cup and needle and seat) kits as I am just cleaning the gunk out. But if you know you need throttle shafts or choke pull offs, a major kit with extra parts you need might be a better buy.

While I don't really have a kit I do have all the parts including the Viton pump cup.

Clark's does sell new throttle shafts with the screws separately from their kit. About 2/3 of the carburetors I've rebuilt needed a new throttle shaft as the old ones wear our at the holes in the base.

Nowadays finding a good used carburetor is getting difficult.

Consider using Gross inlet valves. They work well and don't wear out.

As people have mentioned I carry a good Rochester carb rebuilding kit. It contains all the necessary parts including Viton pump cups and anew bronze fuel filter. The price is $19 plus shipping. These parts are all made in the USA and are a very good quality. I have them listed in my Ebay store under jscorvairparts. I accept Paypal under js189@zoominternet.net

Our kits are the highest quality, most complete and the lowest price of anyone.

The other vendors buy the Viton cups from us.

Rebuilding instructions are on our website with the carb kit listings.

John,

Can you sell the Viton Needle/Seat & Accel Cups separately?
I would need 4 of each.

Jeff at Calif. Corvairs sells the separate Viton accelerator cups and he's in S. Calif. closer to you. Why not give a local vendor some business? I've gotten good service from Jeff and he's always settled any issues I had with his products to my satisfaction.

AFAIK all the newer fuel needle tips are made of Viton, but the ones I've seen are black colored (like the old type) so you can't tell just by looking at them. The Viton accelerator cups are usually blue vs. the old black material cups.

Over the years the only issue I ever had with the fuel needle valves is when someone pushed down on the float to bend the arm to adjust it (NEVER DO IT) and that damaged the fuel needle tip (look for a indented ring in the tip).

Blue Viton id great but all Viton is not blue. I have some black Viton pumps that are 10 years old.

Why don't you contact the vendor directly? Even send a PM?

Info is here and on their internet sites.
