Supplier for Deep Seats

My buddy in SLO (central coast CA) is rebuilding a set of 140 heads and wants to upgrade to deep seats. Where can he buy a set? (He has a good machinist lined up).

I have a source and I live 30 minutes north of SLO.

Send me a P/M with his phone number...I will call him.

Knowing who that machinist is if local would be real handy.

Yes, 6 each. Enough for 2 140 heads.

Email me and I will get pricing and shipping. I might be able to get them in the mail before I head to the track.

Thank you Ken. I'll pass this on to my buddy. He's in no real hurry but I'm sure he will contact you soon.

I would be kind of concerned that this "good machinist" does not know where to aquire deep seats from. He should know the common brands or vendors plus he needs to find seats that will accomodate the tooling he has.

The golden question here though is - does he want 5/16 or 3/8 deep seats?

I talked a little about deep seats with a tighter press fit with my local Machine Shop guy. I haven't pursued it because his lead times are SO LONG on work anyway.
I hope I'm not misquoting numbers but I thought he said industry standard press fit in aluminum heads is .005 and it's built into the tool rather than the seat. So if a guy wants a tighter press fit using an oven and such you need a special tool.
I've avoided talking about it with the guys doing Corvair deep seats because I assumed they wouldn't want to give away their proprietary information.
I'd sure like to know more.

What I've read suggests thermal expansion differences between the aluminum head and seat material will result in a specific tension after thermal cycles - NO matter how tight you make the initial interference fit.

I have now found what the optimal interference fit number is for the Corvair 140HP heads. A good materials engineer could figure it out.
