Do these help with where the stamped numbers are located?

You should buy a copy of the Junkyard Primer, available from Corvair vendors.

Well went over the junk yard OO Recycling center Total staff 1 sells person and 1 puller person. So walked around there yard. All over grown man they got old stuff from the 20's and up.Well they have like 6 or 8 corvairs some was auto but like 3 that were standard. We found one 3 car's hi with no motor but a 4 speed tran's.Looked at the shift knob. Not shores the yr looks like the one I have. They will pull it out during the week remembmer 1 man crew.I bought the trans and diff both.Of course no input shaft. The number stamped on the side of the diff said HA06 and should be a 3.27 ratio.Little cleaning up paid like 350.00 for both.O quick question. Are the trans and diff two different oil sence they both have fill plugs and what type of oil go's in both or same oil type.

They Share lube.. GL-4 ONLY 75-90 works best for most

Fill thru BOTH holes as transfer passage is small. 8 pints max.

Take your input shaft with you to check to see if it has all gears.

Sounds like a fair deal but...if throw out bearing snout was open then there is probably dirt in the differential.

Might be able to clean it out by splitting the transmission off and flushing the differential out with brake clean.

That is a hit or miss proposition...lots of brake clean and compressed air with the top lid off and upside down.

If the engine was removed, check if the throw out bearing snout is cracked.

The capacity of the trans axle would 4 quarts or 1 gal. The manual calls for 1 or 2 tenths more but a gal seems to work just fine.

Quick tips in case you don't know:
61-63 use a 12 tooth input shaft
64-65 use a 14 tooth otherwise they are interchangeable.
4-speed has squarish tin cover on the driver's side.
3-speed has a tin cover on the top.

Forgot to mention that the '64-'65 differentials that mate to the 14t shaft 4-speed use a larger seal in the snout. The large and small shaft seals fit any of the differentials so that isn't a problem. Just make sure the seal matches the input shaft.
Can't use a '65 on the EM unless you are doing something like a GPS speedometer since it doesn't have a speedo drive.
The '64 and '65 also have a dipstick for the differential. I like to add the dipstick to others too.

Yep rules suck sometimes.Well he pulled the axles the day before so when I got there the unit was still in the car.I help hm get the thing unbolted and draged out of the car to the winch truck.Hauled it out to my truck.I took off the diff cover other then the oil is dirty the gears looks ok.Cleaned out the dirt in the main shaft hole and tested looks all good. Will run some dexII oil in it and drain a cupple of times with the shaft in a drill I had welded back together.then let drain and put new seals and gaskets.Still need a input shaft.10 teeth and thinK 23 1/2 inch's long.If any one has one just laying around.smiling smiley

Use the right gear oil for the transmission & differential. Use wrong one and wind up with problems with this unit.

GL4 do NOT use GL5
