I would change the key as they shear sometimes and you will have the gear off.

Hey Al, still hoping for a picture of your faulty crankshaft gear that started this whole "ball of wax".
I keep going back to your picture of your camshaft gear and I find it amazing this even ran.

Working with replacement crankshaft gear today and the paper gasket.

Something tells me I don't have the right gasket. The replacement gear had paper gasket stuck to the chamfer on the crankshaft side of the gear. If you look at the photo, the C786A gasket I have from Clark's for my Big Valve Engine crankshaft (and my spare) is much larger than the gear.

Do I have the wrong gasket for the crankshaft from Clark's? If I do, what is the correct part number?

C786A gasket is located in Clark's Catalog Page 25, Item 11.

I have used some high temp silicone before and has worked fine. The key slot is the biggest concern for oil leaking just like on a harmonic balancer. Yes your gasket is to big. From what I remember it looks kind of like a dist. gasket only a little bigger.

You certainly picked the right gasket. Clark's needs to know before they send out more wrong parts.

I have a email to them to measure what they have. Hopefully they have something different now.

Robert:

Thanks for the info.

Clark's confirmed it is 2.15" OD. I don't know how I got these two C976s put into my system as C786As, but it is solved. I will be ordering the C786s soon to get ready for gear replacement.

Is there any further discussion on different cam timing on Smog engines? It's the first I've heard about it. Maybe it's in a Bob Helt book?

Jim:

I have a proper gear for this engine, so it will not be needed here. Maybe start another thread to get answers for that subject.

Tim:

Here are a few side shots of the crankshaft gear. The faces of the teeth show the roughness. Some have it more than others and some have none.

Yikes! Any idea what beat up this (steel) gear? Was it in the weather? I wonder if it would clean up with a wire wheel? I wonder if I would want to take a chance?

That was wire brushed with a Dremel tool and small wire wheel. It will not get any better.

Rusted sitting in a barn for 30 years, I suspect.

Not taking a chance with that gear. It is being replaced as soon as I get the right gasket for the gear. It will become someone's paperweight or a new chinese tool.

Clark's has my order for a few parts.

John Sweet is working my order today for seals, red gaskets and the Woodruff key

Tom Knoblauch has shipped the lifters.

Still waiting on word from Ken Hand when I can expect the camshaft with gear.

So things are progressing. Most of the cleaning has been done by Donna with some assistance from me. I was digging up all the parts I have on hand to keep from buying extras.

Hey Joel, I got 29 months and 9750 miles. I think most Corvair owners would be happy with the mileage, since they don't drive more than a couple thousand a year.

I don't call it a failure. Just another learning experience on doing these new engine items I haven't done before.

If it had been a rod knock like initially thought, then I would have been the source of the problem for lack of cleanliness. Happy it wasn't. Glad it happened before I sold it.

I wonder how many other have put old engines back in operation which have not run for many years. Do you think some of those had camshaft failures due to bad crank gears? Maybe owners changed the gears thinking the cam gear creating all the beating on the steel gear when the cam gear failed. Just thinking out loud.

My bet is that more people will be looking now for rusty crankshaft gears.

Years ago I learned the hard way that ANY rust pitting on a hardened gear tooth surface ruins it, not matter how well you clean it. Things slowly, but surely get chewed up.

Now I replace the crank gear if it has any corrosion on it.

Same for transmission gears, any corrosion and they go into the junk box.

I wasn't being critical. I was answering Timothy's question.
