() Date: May 28, 2021 04:22PM Do you have both the throttle rods disconnected from the TV lever? That's the only way it will rotate CCW far enough to admit the shift cable. Craig N. The 1963 Corvair shop manual is a supplement, aka 1962/1963 Supplement. You need the 1961 Shop Manual for most information that did not change between 1961 and 1963. In case you do not have a 61 manual, look here: [www.corvair.org] 4. Shift range selecter to "D" (drive), then the cable upper clip in the toe-pan and secure the cable in the multiple clip at the base of the toe-pan. Be sure the rubber protector is installed on the clip to protect the cable sheath. 5. Secure the cable with the three clips provided in the tunnel area. Bow cable towards center line of vehicle to guide cable through hole in engine front support. 6. Install "0" ring seal (fig. 6E-6) on cable, Lubricate "0" ring lightly with Lubriplate. 7. With throttle rods disconnected from the throttle valve (TV) lever on the transmission, rotate the TV lever its full limit counterclockwise and insert cable ball into the slot of the manual valve lever. 8. Fully seat "0" ring and secure installation by installing cap screw and lockwasher. 9. Correctness of installation is easily checked. Once fully tightened, exert a slight hand pressure in the in the notched arm of the TV lever is below the transmission oil pan rail (fig. 6E-7). If hole is above pan rail, cable installation is faulty and must be re-checked. Yes, no picture of the cable ball inside the transmission in the shop manual either. Try it several more times following the directions exactly and see if it finally fits. I have had to do them several times on occasion myself. ![]() Frank DuVal Fredericksburg, VA Re: Automatic Tranny cable Posted by:

() Date: May 28, 2021 06:48PM I did exactly what you said about six times and still no luck. Do I need to drop the transmission pan to find out why the cable is not inserting properly??? Re: Automatic Tranny cable Posted by:

You need the “main” manuals: 1961 or 1965. Supplements like 1963 only cover differences pertinent to that year. Re: Automatic Tranny cable Posted by:

() Date: May 28, 2021 09:25PM Did you follow this step? "7. With throttle rods disconnected from the throttle valve (TV) lever on the transmission, rotate the TV lever its full limit counterclockwise and insert cable ball into the slot of the manual valve lever. To elaborate on Craig's post: Feeble memory, been decades... Need to hold the TV lever as you insert the cable. TV lever vertical / almost vertical??? When inserting cable, you need to angle it slightly downward to "clear" - completely insert cable. Re: Automatic Tranny cable Posted by:

() Date: May 29, 2021 02:10AM When I was setting up cable in my LM More Door, I too could not get it right. Here is how I confirmed proper assembly after doing manual procedure. I held the cable flange against transmission and a friend selected reverse on the shift lever on the instrument panel. I then tried to pull cable out of transmission. It did not pull out. () Date: May 29, 2021 05:23AM The dash selector needs to be in Drive so the cable sticks out far enough. I think Low position works too. The Service Manual also shows what the accelerator lever position looks like when the cable is correctly or incorrectly installed. They can be sort of a bugger sometimes but it seems like the more I do it the luckier I get. Jim Brandberg Isanti, MN CorvairRepair.com ![]() Re: Automatic Tranny cable Posted by:

And by hold it means with pressure against its internal stop. Just getting it close to its CCW position is failure. And of course hold the cable flange tight against the transmission while you do one of these: A. Have someone test as Lane says above B. Insert the bolt to hold the flange tight to the transmission. C. Turn the TV lever full CW. You should not be able to pull the cable out at this point. IIRC If you let go of the cable and the TV lever at the same time, the ball does not stay in place.
