A Few Corvair Air Conditioning Details with Pics
Posted by: azdave ()
Date: May 26, 2021 10:48AM

While parting out a 66 Monza with factory installed A/C, I thought I would pause and post a few pics and details that I myself have had trouble finding here on the forum. Several people have asked me about details like the hidden dash support, the rain deflector in the front cowl and also the mercury tilt switch used in 66-67.

I'll add things to this thread from time-to-time and welcome others to join in because I'm certainly not any authority on A/C in Vairs. I don't intend this to be an all-inclusive thread about air conditioning, just a place to more easily find these less documented things about the Corvair air conditioning system.

The first item I'll cover is one I was recently asked to show using my parts car because normally, it is not easy to see this clearly without some major disassembly under the dash. This is the extra support brace that is added when the inner dash structure has to be cut in half in order to clear the special Heat/Cool control assembly that is taller and won't fit otherwise. I've added text to the images to help clarify.

Here is the flip side to the extra dash support bracket for LM’s explained in my first post. The bracket top has a pressed in stud that mounts high up under the dash. This stud ends up penetrating to the exterior of the car, hidden from external view and high up under the cowl vents. It is actually visible if you know where to look. After checking for the Group 2 “E” code on the Fisher Body tag this is often the next place I check to see if a car has factory A/C installed because many people leave that support bracket out during self-installs. I’ll bet some dealers left it out too when they saw the high PIA factor required to place it properly.

Interestingly, while looking at my non-A/C LM Corvairs, I discovered that there is a dimple in the sheet metal showing where to drill the hole required for the stud. Experts might know that already but I didn’t. I’ve seen that dimple now in several of my LM’s but it is something most people (including myself up until now) would never notice otherwise. You should be able to look closely through the 6th cowl vent slot from the center (on the driver’s side) and either see this bump or a nut with a star washer and a little oily debris around the stud. Dum-dum sealer was used inside when the bracket was installed.

Pics below are from different vehicles but will help explain what to look for.

That brace (support bracket) is a part that can be easily fabricated. It would be nice to use the original part to fabricate/reproduce though. Kind of reminds me of the alternator support that many people have made when changing to an IR style.

Good stuff here Dave. Thank you for posting this stuff. Keep it coming.

I might have one to sell but I could also make one up that would serve the same purpose (if you don't mind a few manufacturing marks). smiling smiley

Thanks Dave. My car has "factory" A/C, but did not come from the factory that way.
I'll have to check for the presence of that cutout and brace.

Dave,
Hoping your '66 Monza with a/c was a 140hp manual trans with a RZ code engine/case I could buy?

Pretty sure I looked for one of those long ago but I'll check my pile of junk treasure trove for you. This parts car came to me with no engine (but I did find an NOS 66 Corsa rear air exit grill insert buried in the interior. That was an unexpected score.

I'll be in those parts boxes over the holiday weekend. I know I have a spare rain shield at least. I'll post about that detail next.

Great pictures and information Dave.

I was lucky to be able to copy from my factory A/C 4 door for my other car.

Apparently the folks at Fisher Body never heard of a metal cutting saw as all the cuts were made with a torch, even the center dash vent opening!!!

Picture a large fellow yielding a glowing cutting torch. He's wearing thick gloves and dark goggles while sitting awkwardly inside the trunk as he cuts holes freehand. What could go wrong? grinning smiley

Here is the LM rain shield that should be found on 65-67 factory A/C Corvairs. It is easily seen though the wiper area grill below the windshield on the passenger side. This shield helps deflect water from entering the fresh air intake of the trunk-mounted A/C blower and evaporator box.

The fit of the shield is never perfect, especially where it extends further to the right you will see there is quite a gap. The shield inserts through the hole first before it is retained by two small hex head screws from the trunk side. The shield is not retained by being sandwiched between the bulkhead and the evaporator assembly.

The photos also show how nasty the holes look as cut by the factory with a cutting torch. This often fools owners who think their A/C must have been installed by an amateur and not the factory.

It's payback in return for all the help I have received here. Feel free to use any of these photos. I have better quality copies if you need them.

I'm thinking I'll show some details of the very rare mercury tilt switch next. For that, I'll borrow some old images from The Stig as well as some I'll take in the next day or two.
