Murphy
() Date: April 01, 2021 10:41AM Do people balance the halfshaft on our cars? Is it something that is do-able? Reason I ask is I have had several sets of tires and wheels on my '65 Monza, and there is always a vibration on right side of car starting about 50mph. Right now I have a set of 15 inch rally wheelswith new tires and, vibration is still there. All rubber on car , motor mounts, bushings, etc. have been replaced. I'm running out of ideas. () Date: April 01, 2021 10:46AM The axle could be bent...have you tried a different axle? Also the u-joints could be worn possibly causing the shake. Re: Question about LM halfshaft/axelshaft Posted by:

() Date: April 01, 2021 11:11AM As Joel recently showed check the Balance of the brake drum only Old bubble balancer will show you. Any tire shop with newer balancer and a grinder can balance it. !/2 shafts can are balanced by local Driveline shops. MODERATOR Sea Mountain, between Charleston Harbor and Coos Bay! No, I haven't tried a different axel. U-joints fairly new. Swapping side to side might show something. We'll see. 65 Monza Coupe 61 500 Coupe-W100181 Earliest '61 Alive? ![]() ![]() ![]() Re: Question about LM halfshaft/axelshaft Posted by:

() Date: April 01, 2021 06:04PM Now I remember v8vair chased a shake in his racecar that was a brake drum like Matt said. Re: Question about LM halfshaft/axelshaft Posted by:

() Date: April 01, 2021 06:11PM I found my drums way out on the early racer, I first checked them on my bubble balancer and I’d couldn’t believe how bad they were so I took and checked them on a flywheel/crank balancer . That was one of the vibrations cured ! 1965 Crown V8 Racer 1964 Bill Thomas Monza Replica Racer 1964 Spyder Street Car 1979 Mazda RX7 Mike Levine Re: Question about LM halfshaft/axelshaft Posted by:

() Date: April 01, 2021 06:40PM You drilled a lot of holes. That drum was not even close to being balanced. I would never thought one would be that bad. Thanks for posting. . v8vair Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The factory weight was wrong ! it was easier to drill the weight off than get the weight off Troy G. / Scottsdale Arizona '65 140 Corsa Coupe '66 140 Corsa Coupe - Crown Converted in the '60's Re: Question about LM halfshaft/axelshaft Posted by:

() Date: April 01, 2021 11:18PM Bent trailing arm? - or whatever it is called. Assume you have had a 4 wheel alignment done? Re: Question about LM halfshaft/axelshaft Posted by:

() Date: April 02, 2021 02:44AM I have never seen an axle cause a vibration. It's low speed and small diameter would be not a likely source of a vibration. Re: Question about LM halfshaft/axelshaft Posted by:

() Date: April 02, 2021 06:57AM Get a pair of half shafts made out of aluminum. They are much lighter and therefor have less mass to vibrate. of course they run about $300 or more each! 66RTVair Oregon 1965 Corsa 140 stock 1966 Monza DP Racecar 1968 Monza Parts for now Re: Question about LM halfshaft/axelshaft Posted by:

() Date: April 02, 2021 04:42PM I have heard of guys unbolting them, rotating 180 degrees and bolting back up, to cure some issues. irfgt Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I have never seen an axle cause a vibration. () Date: April 02, 2021 05:06PM I think he ment in comparison to a standard driveshaft which turn 2.7-4 x faster than the wheels. At 3500 rpm in final gear our half shafts are only turning at about 1000 rpm depending on diff ratio, compared to 3500 for a solid axle rear end's drive shaft. -Tom ![]() 63' Monza Spyder Convertable (in process) MY Build Thread 65' Monza MY Build Thread 73' NovaSS 454 Big block (Sold) 86' BMW 325es 98' VW Jetta TDI, for daughter 01' Audi Allroad Stage 3 twin turbo 67' UltraVan 211 "Violet" NFCC, UMCC Grand Island, NY Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum. |
