Fuel line repair

I want to replace the rubber fuel line in my engine compartment of my 65 140 hp to make it all metal. The metal line was cut by the PO and a rubber line installed along with a fuel filter.

Is there a fitting that I can get that splices a steel line to the existing steel line? I also need to add my Mr. Gasket fuel pressure regulator in-line. Do I have to flare the lines? The steel line will go to the Clarks fuel pump by-pass plate.

I use fitting called 'union' with compression rings on both ends. No flare needed the compression rings are squeezed into the fuel line. I can offer part numbers:
Edelmann: 162500
Everco: 62D
Weatherhead: 62x5

With your 140hp and low pressure fuel pump there is really no need for a regulator.

best wishes, Steve

If you can make a double flare on the steel tubing they sell couplers to hook 2 together.

Thanks Steve. This is great info!

The elect. fuel pump I'm using puts out 5-7 psi and I was getting bowl flooding without the reg. Now I'm set at 3.5 psi and all is good.

Normally I would suggest putting the fuel filter in the rubber hose area over the rear axle, left side, in front of the engine firewall. Like a WIX 33032. But, you are running an electric pump, so the filter should go before the pump.

Those compression unions Steve mentioned will be fine for splicing steel tubing.

This may be what I experience with my FC. I have an electric fuel pump just aft of the fuel tank and an inline filter just aft of that. I have no problem when I first fire up after sitting a while. I can hear the pump build pressure and turn the key, bingo.

Shut it down for a while and return and turn the key. Often, it starts right up but, if not, it is probably flooded. I can crank all day but usually need to walk away and after awhile, bingo again - it starts.

It is fairly important to never use rubber line inside the engine compartment. A rupture can cause a major fire. As Rex said, if you don't want to just replace the steel line, couple it to a new line. If you can make that flare, you may as well just make the whole line. If you can't make it, buy one from Clark's.

The only filter you need before the electric is the little screen that comes on the airtex, or the sock in your tank (actually better than the airtex inlet filter). Then let it push the fuel through the good, metal filter in the wheel well.

I recommend the filter installed up at the fuel tank outlet. The weight of the fuel in the tank will will help push fuel through the filter and not put a load on the fuel pump that is designed to make fuel pressure. Also it's a safe position.
As for the fuel line in the engine compartment. I would recommend replacing it.
