Most of them look like that because they hang down so low. I like the idea of using a 3-speed switch instead. It goes inside the tunnel and works from a tab on the shift tube.

Craig replies: This is as good a time as any to educate me and probably others: Where is this moving tab? I've rebuilt several LM shift tubes and as I recall it's sealed from one end to the other. I don't recall any holes in the tube or tabs sticking out.

EMs only have a single tube. A tab clamps to the tube that activates the 3-speed plunger switch in the tunnel. That brings up a question - how does the '65 3-speed switch work?
It appears Clark's doesn't know either. See the mistake in the listing?

Good question. I guess Joel is like me in thinking of the early shift tube that is open all the way from the shifter to the shift coupler. I do not recall what the 1965 shift tube looks like on a 3 speed manual equipped car.

Matt Nall had a picture of his 1965 replacement switch installation, but the link I found no longer wor ksfor me!!

Picture shows / verifies...LM shifters have the ROD to stabilze TUBE that has the shaft inside!!!

We all know what LM shifter setups look like. I just didn't know how the factory did the 3-speed hence the question.
I actually like your idea for replacing the 4-speed switch quickly without messing with the wiring but the in the tunnel approach protects the switch.

FWIW - My Corvair mechanic used to cut the wires and put on electrical connectors so that he did not have to run the wire all the way to the front - inside the back of the tunnel. Zip tie to the wiring harness.

How come this is titled 63 Corvair? I had to scan the picture for clues until I saw the trailing arms and such.

Because the OP used a photo borrowed from a 2010 thread here on CC to show a similar part and ask the question about the 63 he just bought from an auction. He did not have a pic of his own I assume. Photo was taken originally by member "ron L".

When I was a teenager with MY first Corvair, a 66 Monza... I converted it to a 4spd from automatic. In the ash tray I had two toggle switches. One for back up lights. The other to turn off the brake lights when I shot past hidden police cars out in the county when I lived in Upstate NY!!!!

And just to be clear, and since the original poster asked what that part was. The hex plug right next to it is NOT a drain plug.
