() Date: January 12, 2021 12:22PM I have the original alternator that came with my 1965 Corsa. Looking at the date code,4L11 1100639 this appears to be a 37A 1964 December 11th. Can this be up-graded to a 47A in this housing? Is there a rebuild kit available? 1965 Corsa 2nd owner Re: alternator Posted by:

() Date: January 12, 2021 12:51PM I'd just buy a 55A rebuilt and swap-over the Corvair end housing and fan. Craig N. () Date: January 12, 2021 01:22PM Yes, it can. But, I do not know all the pieces you need (to transfer). Need a good alternator rebuild shop near you. Or, a known 47 amp alternator of the same vintage. 63 amp also, for that matter. Re: alternator Posted by:

() Date: January 12, 2021 01:32PM Only the front cast aluminum piece (the one with two large mounting holes in the bottom) and the fan/drive pulley (one-piece on the Corvair) need to be moved over and re-used. () Date: January 12, 2021 02:08PM I think he wants to upgrade his existing alternator because he wants to keep the date coded housing that is original to his car / engine. Re: alternator Posted by:

The date code is on the front housing/bracket which gets reused if the back is exchanged for one with a higher capacity or an internal regulator back. Craig N. () Date: January 13, 2021 12:55AM Looks like the easiest (cheapest) route to 47 amp is to buy a remaned Corvair alternator and transfer your front housing - looked and Autozone carries one. Other flaps probably do, too. I assume you want to keep the stock rear housing? I do not know of any flaps that would carry the stator and rotor or the other pieces now - or even long ago. As I stated before, if you have a business that rebuild alternators / starters in your area, you should be able to get them to upgrade your alternator, but it would probably cost more than my first suggestion. I doubt many are in business now. The last time I bought parts (brushes / bearings) to rebuild my alternator, the parts guy tried to sell me a remaned alternator. A couple of the parts boxes had dust on them. To get to 63 amps and keep the stock rear housing, you would need an alternator rebuild shop. I could not find a 63 amp Corvair alternator at Autozone. Per my experience, IF the rebuilder installs a new fan and pulley it WON'T be the correct reverse rotation fan unique to the Corvair. Re: alternator Posted by:

() Date: January 13, 2021 10:17AM I have one and it works fine, A few seconds with my impact wrench in both directions it was good to go. Its been installed for several years. Someone on the group mentioned it several years ago for $40+ bucks. I got one at that time. Full disclosure. It did start to develop slight squeak when warm. It took it apart to inspect the bearings, everything seemed fine. It looked like there was more than normal carbon buildup on the slip rings so I polished them with micro cut. The sound was gone for months but then returned. I'm thinking it may be some weird carbon compound for the brushes. I may try some old Delco brushes IF I ever get the energy. This issue is something you Flow Master guys would never have to worry about. I can hear on my car unless the hood is open. () Date: January 13, 2021 02:49PM I looked that one up on Autozone's site and didn't see the amp rating anywhere in the specs. I bought one a few years ago for $19.99 there and the bearings started making noise almost immediately. I went to claim my lifetime warranty and they didn't carry them any longer. I guess my warranty is good again now. Joel Northlake, TX 5 Ultravans, 114 Corvairs and counting... ![]() Re: alternator Posted by:

Maybe it is the route I took through their catalog??? Re: alternator Posted by:
