Looking for someone experienced in getting the most power our of a stock appearing Spyder engine rebuild.

I doubt you will find anyone closer (Golden is 20 miles from Littleton) or anyone with more experience than Steve Goodman. He owns a 62 Monza Spyder that he raced for many years THAT HE BOUGHT NEW AND STILL HAS.

I'd start with Dyno time and a well known Vair Turbo tuner. Some guys have Turbo cars that run high 12's in the quarter.

Is this a "grudge race" or a Class of NHRA?

You can put a lot of $$ INSIDE a Vair engine Big Bore 3Litre Massive head flow work, and enlargement of the YH.

Hey Matt, is that throttle body yours, and did you ever use it? I had thought about doing the same, but you’re still stuck with venturi, which is kinda restrictive.

We race Nostalgia Super STock Oldsmobiles, but I have always had a thing for Corvairs (my first new car in 1963). My college buddy and I ran a 64 Spyder back in the day and whipped up on many a stock 283 Chevy. So I would love to have my 64 Spyder be "stock appearing" drag car. I have never seen one at any event. I would love to meet up with those guys who campaign 12 second turbo Corvairs.

The biggest issue is being able to leave the line with boost.
Easiest is a PG with a high stall converter with which you can hold it with the foot brake and spool it up.
Harder would be a stick which you would need a 2 step (which is very hard on the bottom end). A lot of EFI set ups have built in launch control which retards the timing to raise the EGT's to assist in spool up.
Another option would be a small shot of nitrous off the line.
I have drag raced my turbo many times. The launch is the hard part. Mine takes off like a rocket in 2nd gear.
I will also add that you will not be running 12's in a full weight Corvair at stock boost levels. You will most likely need to run 20 psi + at which time, you are out of the efficient range of the F compressor (the air charge temperatures go way up when you start going higher than the stock boost levels). You would need an E compressor to accomplish it.

It will be interesting, if Wayne completes this project, to see what kind of HP can be produced with a stock appearing YH.

We know Ray Clayton has found 380 hp from an N/A Vair. Most likely has taken him, 5 years, 15+ builds and a few 1000 hours of headwork.
