I have one of the "corrugated" type that Jim is talking about and it is not 40 years old. The corrugated part keeps it on top of the cylinder and from not trying to follow the piston into the cylinder. For installing them when not on an engine I use a 1/3 of a block half that I set on my press bed and then use the hammer handle to tap it thru.
