() Date: January 02, 2021 05:33AM Any recommendations for a new clutch install plus the bearings in West Palm Beach for my 65 140hp Corsa? Also, should I go stock or spend an extra $100 for a Performance Clutch from Clarks? () Date: January 02, 2021 07:18AM I don't know about a shop but I do know the stock clutches are very durable. If I was recommending a change to the clutch I would work on lightening it. If I was recommending a change to the clutch I would work on lightening it. Yes the stock type clutch is durable. "Kevlar" compounds vary a lot. I've had too many negative experiences with "Kevlar" products and gave up on them. If you are "hard" on a clutch I would suggest buying Clark's rebuilt pressure plate as they seem to be the ONLY rebuilder that installs a new PP diaphragm spring!! If the used PP diaphragm tension tests good it CAN be re-used. Re: Clutch install mechanic/shop in West Palm Beach Posted by:

() Date: January 02, 2021 07:43PM Mike about the only person that is doing anything Corvair all the time is a guy in central Fl. I forget his name but I'll look or check Corsa magazine. Good luck Re: Clutch install mechanic/shop in West Palm Beach Posted by:

Do not know if I am reading Clark’s catalog correctlyp, but it looks like all the parts are $700. - maybe more Re: Clutch install mechanic/shop in West Palm Beach Posted by:

() Date: January 05, 2021 12:30AM Should add that Clark's mentions that the flywheel, disc and pressure plate should be balanced together. I agree - I always had the parts balanced when I had the clutch replaced. That is another cost. Plus finding a competent balancer. Maybe the mechanic knows of one that he uses. Labor only. How many hours to do the job? Multiply by shop rate. Of course it will take longer once other issues or cleaning is involved. ![]() Frank DuVal Fredericksburg, VA Re: Clutch install mechanic/shop in West Palm Beach Posted by:

() Date: January 08, 2021 07:33AM A couple years ago I had my F-250 trans replaced by Vic's transmission in Lake Park, and the owner mentioned he knows Corvairs and has PG repair stuff in stock. In WPB, I go to Ernie Bello Motorsports Tire for tires, brakes, suspension. Known Ernie since the 70s. He knows everybody, would be a good resource to ask about where to have transmission work done. Bayles Tuning in WPB, I went there to get an estimate for some work on the F-250. Owner mentioned he takes care of 3 regulars who drive Corvairs. Rough looking shop but he seems busy. Road n' Race Tune in Riviera Beach. Peter Shadowen's (multiple SCCA GTL national champ) shop. Good shop, also could dyno tune your car. Munson's Auto in Mangonia Park. I'll check with Vics. 1965 Corvair Corsa 140 Regal red over Red/Black Interior Mods/Options: Wood telescoping Steering Wheel Clock (correct twice a day) tinted Windshield 4 Speed manual Rear Ant passenger side mirror electric fuel pump Vintique type 30 rally whels Re: Clutch install mechanic/shop in West Palm Beach Posted by:

() Date: January 08, 2021 06:29PM If a shop wants me to order parts, what do I need specifically need besides throw-out bearing; pilot bushing, input shaft seal and split ring, pressure plate. and clutch disc? 1965 Corvair Corsa 140 Regal red over Red/Black Interior Mods/Options: Wood telescoping Steering Wheel Clock (correct twice a day) tinted Windshield 4 Speed manual Rear Ant passenger side mirror electric fuel pump Vintique type 30 rally whels Re: Clutch install mechanic/shop in West Palm Beach Posted by:

() Date: January 08, 2021 06:40PM You shouldn't need the split ring. I guess it wouldn't hurt since it doesn't cost much. You might consider having them replace the rear main seal while they have it apart. That would require a seal, bell housing gasket and pan gasket. () Date: January 08, 2021 08:13PM I strongly recommend a reputably rebuilt resurfaced (bolted flywheel) You dont want to take it apart again for a rattling flywheel. ![]() Ray Johnson Villa Park IL 63 Spyder Conv. 140 EFI Re: Clutch install mechanic/shop in West Palm Beach Posted by:

Agreed, not to mention you have to have the clutch disk properly centered or it will invalidate the balancing process. Also DO mark the PP orientation to the flywheel to maintain same orientation when it was balanced during installation into the vehicle. Re: Clutch install mechanic/shop in West Palm Beach Posted by:

Yeah, the last time (decades ago) I had the flywheel / pressure plate balanced, the guy "complained" that I did not provide the clutch disc. With your comments, I would have thought that he would balance the clutch disc by itself? He did shave the heads of the bolts a little - to get matching weights, I assume. > > Also DO mark the PP orientation to the flywheel to maintain same orientation when it was balanced during installation into the vehicle. Wouldn't a good balancer already have done that? Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum. |
