() Date: November 20, 2020 09:16AM Hi all, Can't remember where I saw this but I guess you can machine the seal bore depth to match the late one? Ed Re: Converting early bell housing to late Posted by:

() Date: November 20, 2020 09:20AM Don't think so, better to just get the correct bell housing, Bell housing follows the crank, Early crank = Early Bell housing, Late crank = Late Bell housing. ![]() ![]() 1960 4dr sedan caveman car 1961 Rampside (Chetside) 1962 Rampside (Barnside) 1962 Short Rampside (Shortside) 1962 Monza 700 Wagon 1963 Monza 900 coup (General Nader) ----------------------------------- Rust Free Lancaster Ca Re: Converting early bell housing to late Posted by:

() Date: November 20, 2020 10:01AM This is covered in "Hot to Hot Rod Corvair Engines" (Page 65 in my copy). You can purchase a .070" seal spacer from Clarks or *as I recall* cylinder base gaskets are the right size and a small stack of them will add up to the needed thickness. As Dave noted, it might be easier to just get the correct bell housing. Craig N. () Date: November 20, 2020 01:21PM OK, found it in the revised book on pg 70. Install a spacer(.065-.070) under crank seal to move seal back. Ed Re: Converting early bell housing to late Posted by:

() Date: November 20, 2020 02:26PM There is no spacer needed! I am right now writing a post with pictures about this very thing. You can use any bell housing with any crank! Ken Hand Handy Car Care 248 613 8586 Vairmech@aol.com Re: Converting early bell housing to late Posted by:

O.K. I was going to mention the different crank gears, but you addressed it in a different post. I assume the longer stroke crank gear won't work with a the the earlier flywheel as that was an issue brought up here at one time. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 11/20/2020 03:49PM by 66vairman. Addressing the early flywheel on a late crank; it could hit at some point. The weight ring is almost double the thickness of the late moving it closer to the bolt heads. That is probably why the extra length on the seal area. Ken Hand Handy Car Care 248 613 8586 Vairmech@aol.com Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum. |
