Starter bushing undersize
Posted by: joelsplace ()

Since I'm in the starter I'm wondering about undersize bushings. I have some Clark's .002" undersize that fit the armature perfectly. When I press them in the housing how much crush will I get? I'm thinking they might be too small after installation.

Unless there is visible wear on the end of the shaft that rides in the housing it will be to tight. Now if the housing is loose on the bushing but just enough to hold it in you might be OK.

I agree. I've got an assortment of bushings so I'll try one that seems too loose and hopefully it will tighten up just right.

I don't know of a wheel cylinder hone that would go that small.

When it gets to small for a wheel cylinder hone, I take a piece of coat hanger and fold it back 180 degrees. One shorter than the other, then take a piece of wet or dry, fold it over place it between the wires and make a small flap wheel. If you can picture it. Cheap, frugal, red neck what ever you call it

Good tip for a home made hone. Thanks!
The standard bushing ended up being tight enough that I don't think the .002 undersize would have worked. I need to buy an adjustable reamer and a bunch of the .005 undersize bushings.
