Anybody need/want some used late model smog pistons? I definitely don't need them. I also have the jugs if wanted. Free to good home!

I feel like I should say 'yes', since I have 2 68 95hp engines in the cars I drive the most....

Eric, your 95hp pistons would be no different than any 64-69 flat top. I ASSUME the smog pistons listed are pop-ups used in a smog 110hp.

Interesting - for some reason, I thought that the 95hp smog pistons were also pop top.

There is no quench on a smog 95 or 110 head that is common between the two.

The smog 95 and 110's have an open chamber that looks just like a 180 turbo head.

Do you have a picture of the casting number? Lots of discrepancies. Like 65-66, 65-69, 65-67.

I do- but it’s a PITA to post from my phone. You can trust me that I can read. Both heads on the engine clearly read 3878569.

To make it more fun, the block code is RG.
The pistons are flat top, at least in this one.

RG would explain the head you've shown.

Here's the photo of the head number.

So, are we saying that this is a 66 95hp head?

[ssl.corvair.com]

If it has the chamber shown above and ALL 3/8'-16 shroud bolts, it is a 66-67 95 hp head.
If it has the chamber shown above and has a MIX of 3/8"-16 and 1/4"-20 shroud bolts, it is a 65 95hp head.

Someday someone will want a pop-up piston in order to do a simple low budget repair and motor on. They're not making them anymore.

Now I'm a bit confused about the shape of smog heads like 3878569. My memory does not match the picture.
The way my heads are stored I have to take the whole stack apart to get at one on the bottom.

Jim -

Doing more internet digging - it looks like Clarks, Junkyard Primer and other sources include 3878569 as a 68-69 95hp SMOG head...but they are incorrect, based on the chamber design.

3878569 should be a 65-66 95hp engine.

Guess I need to get under the Rampside and read the head numbers. Its a 1968 dated block (1968 VIN stamped into it too), and a 95hp. I wonder what heads it has - thought it was this same number.

The open chamber 69 head I have is 3880708. I must have sold or used the other one.

The CORSA Tech Guide correctly lists it but the Junkyard Primer has it wrong.

3878569 is correctly listed in the Tech Guide but wrong in the Junkyard Primer.

Of course you're better off with a quench than open chamber.
