Looking for a Group 53 Battery
Posted by: whubbell ()

I know this a fool's errand, but if anybody knows where I might purchase a working Group 53 battery, please PM me - preferably a Delco battery or at least one that I could re-label so as to appear Delco

I have 2 Delco NOS batteries... One is a very early 1962, and the other has push in caps like the 1964. A couple of months ago, I bought a 3 year battery from Interstate that is close in size to the Corvair battery, but is for a foreign car, and it cost me $140 plus the core. Battery prices have gone through the roof!

Group 53 batteries are pretty much no longer available. Most people use a 51R that fits many Hondas and other late model cars. Fits the space fairly well and is readily available at around $125.

I use the Delco Group 51R so it at least looks stock.

And that works GREAT, for basic Car Shows, and Cruise-ins thumbs up, but Bill is looking for actual STOCK, not something that "Looks" stock.
He needs it for C.O.R.S.A. Concours judging.

The battery that Bill needs is a rare animal, since the 1964 used 2 plastic push in caps that had had a rubber vent attached to them. Prior to 1964, the Delco battery used screw in caps.

Junkman - this is not entirely correct. The push cap vented battery did not appear until roughly late January of 1964 - prior to that, all 1964 Corvairs used the screw top Delco battery.

The Glenn car's build date is 09C (3rd week of September, 1963), so it definitely used the screw in caps.

I am assuming you could tell by looking to see if it has the rubber grommet with the two holes for the hoses. And for you guys wondering what that grommet is for, here ya go. I had some Walmart batteries that had two little square vent holes on the ends. I used heat shrink and tubing to act as the original battery vent.

Bill,
If you do find a NOS Group 53 battery, possibly the last thing you may wish to do is add acid to it. It will not be long before you're looking for another NOS Group 53. I'm sure of the logistical options in a car, but in the Firebrier I have the dry NOS Group 53 mounted in place with another operational battery hidden below. The cables run to the Group 53 battery such that it looks to be the functional battery ... and will forever be NOS.

Deka (EastPenn) does show model 353 in their current on line catalog.

Maybe try calling them directly to check availability and where to buy...

Craig,

That 2040 Parts website is quite famous for being a scam. They steal ads from sellers on other sites and then hunt for unsuspecting buyers.

WalMart has the Deka 353 for $10.83 with free shipping and no tax. I ordered 5.
It is on WalMart's site but is coming from somewhere else.
