() Date: October 28, 2020 02:01PM So the old man down the street has bought a used pickup. It wont start. It won't even engage the starter. Fresh battery in it, and all you can hear are some relays under the hood clicking when you attempt to turn it over. Zero sounds coming from the starter, or solenoid. The man he bought it from told him that "It has an ignition switch issue, but if you jiggle it around, it will start." Well, I have tried that also, and still no luck. I tried turning the key off and on rapidly, hoping that, that would make some kind of connection in there. It DID, but not something good! Now there is a little dash light icon lit up and it will not go off. It is a silhouette of a car, with a Padlock! It seems I may have activate some kind of security device? (Normal keys for the truck, no fobs. It is a pretty base model) I looked through the owners manual, it does show that icon on the illustration of all the dash lights, but it does not actually mention anything about it in the owners manual! Not actually sure it is the switch at this point. Any help in this matter would be HIGHLY appreciate. If it is the switch, is it possible to just bypass the ignition switch on something this new? (Or is it tied into the computer somehow?) Not worried about security in this community. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- WA. state, 1 mile south of the Canadian border, I am not at the end of the world, but you can see it from here. () Date: October 28, 2020 05:19PM Have someone with a test light check for switched power at the starter while someone turns the key to start. If you have power, you need a starter. Not uncommon. If no power, check fuses. Ignition switch is a possibility. Start at the starter and work your way back. -------------------------------- Ronnie Southern Maine. www.dirigocorvairs.net 66 Corsa Convertible, 140, 4sp. 65 Monza Convertible, 110, PG. () Date: October 28, 2020 06:13PM I always start with the basics. What is the voltage at the battery? Any voltage drops at all the main connections (starter, ground points, cables, alternators, etc.). Only takes a minute and then you know that part will not impede your progress. () Date: October 28, 2020 07:07PM Hey Mel, step one, WHAT YEAR? Is it a VATS ignition switch with the resistor (chip) in the key? Looks like a typical square head GM key but along the shaft is a black plastic rectangle with a piece of metal sticking out of both sides. [www.vatskey.com]. I just had to cut a new key for my 94 Caprice wagon, as the resistor had opened up electrically (infinity ohms, open circuit). Put key in, turned and no noise from starter, but the Pass Key Fault light came on, same as the picture icon you said on the neighbor's truck. () Date: October 28, 2020 07:35PM Sorry, should have stated year. 2003, 1500, V6, Automatic, 4X4, Base Model with manual everything and rubber floors. No Security System. You know, white fleet special. Neither set of keys we were given have a chip in them. Vehicle has no codes thrown. We have tried tilting the wheels, as well as running the shift lever through all possible positions. No, the wheels is not locked, and yes, I even tried rotating the wheels while attempting to start it. (I had never heard of that one before, but the old guy suggested it, so I complied.) Battery is Brand NEW, I even threw it on a charger, just to make sure it really was fully charged before trying to start it. We got it push into his shop this afternoon, and onto the lift. I will take a gander at the starter itself next, Thanks for the suggestions, and keep them coming. ![]() Here is what the symbol looks like, but it is yellow, not red. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- WA. state, 1 mile south of the Canadian border, I am not at the end of the world, but you can see it from here. () Date: October 28, 2020 08:01PM Found this on google The lock icone appeared in the dash of my Silverado 1500 2003. Now the truck won't start not even the starter turn. The dealer want me to bring him the car...What is the procedure to get rid of that annoyance? TKS 2 Answers 256,405 G A answered 4 years ago The security system has been activated, usually you can deactivate it by using the key fob and locking then unlocking the doors, if you don't have the fob then using the key doing the same thing, sometimes you have use the passenger door but normally the drivers door will work. () Date: October 28, 2020 11:14PM One of our members here sent me an article about GM Anti-theft systems. > > > What are, VATS, Passkey, Passlock I, Passlock II, Passlock III (PK3), and Immobilizer. < < < It seems that ALL GM vehicles built after the mid 1980's has some form of these. Not to be confused with "Content Security Systems" that alert you with a honking horn if someone breaks into your car, these systems all use some form of vehicle immobilization. These frail GM systems seem to be prone to failure after about 7 years. This is most likely what is wrong with this truck. In the comments section following the article someone mentioned New Rockies Inc. (https://newrockies.com/ ) which makes a security bypass kit. Sounds like just the ticket. ![]() -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- WA. state, 1 mile south of the Canadian border, I am not at the end of the world, but you can see it from here. Got a link? Does it bypass the entire system, or just the key, or the TDM (or BCM, or IPC) The New Rockies bypasses the entire system. I agree, it is costly, but I don't want to have to go into it a second time because the next link in the system has failed. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- WA. state, 1 mile south of the Canadian border, I am not at the end of the world, but you can see it from here. () Date: October 29, 2020 01:08PM Joel, after some searching, I found it. Unfortunately, it is for VATS, not Passlock, and it is only a work-around for an engine swap. "This module is meant to work when swapping an 92-93 LT1, 94-95 LT1, or 97-98 LS1 engine into a different application and doesn't work in factory applications with chipped keys." -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- WA. state, 1 mile south of the Canadian border, I am not at the end of the world, but you can see it from here. () Date: November 15, 2020 03:16PM Update. The truck did need a new starter, but it also did need the by-pass to eliminate the security lock out. I went through all of the reset steps and it just would not recognize the factory keys. Installed the by-pass, and baroom, she fired right up. ![]() Craig had bought a pig-in-a-poke, but she has cleaned up into a really nice work truck. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- WA. state, 1 mile south of the Canadian border, I am not at the end of the world, but you can see it from here.
