Electric Hummer - the truck that is.
Posted by: 66vairman ()

It looks like GM is leaking details of the new all electric Hummer truck.

If the 1,000HP and 11,500 ft lbs. of torque are true it should be interesting, but you'll have to wait a while.

I've long favored the adage, "The bigger the truck, the smaller the _____."

WoW, I must be out of touch.
All this time, I was under the impression that GM had sold Hummer to the Chinese.

I'm too lazy to look it up, but GM tried to sell the HMMWV military vehicle divison. Not sure if they succeeded.

They kept the rights to the "Hummer" name.

"1,000HP and 11,500 ft lbs. of torque " - in an electric vehicle

has little relationship to the same numbers in a hydrocarbon fuel vehicle.

The bottom line for useful comparison would be ENERGY DENSITY

Approximate comparisons:
Gasoline is - - 47.5 MJ/kg and 34.5 MJ/liter
Diesel fuel - - 38.5 MJ/kg and 45.5 MJ/liter
Lithium-ion - 00.3 MJ/kg and 00.4 MJ/liter

Hydrocarbons have over 100 times the energy density of a lithium-ion battery pack.

Efficiency in the application of the power definitely makes a difference with that easily won by an electric motor, but when we are talking real world work from a truck.....

Because of dreadful energy density, you would need an enormous battery system and plenty of charging time to move large loads for long distances over time with electrics. Also remember that as the heavy battery system discharges - it still weighs the same as it did when fully charged!!

Tow a 4000 pound trailer say 200 miles up to the mountains to camp for a week with an electric truck. Most everything said about the range per charge is going to be probably less than half of just the unladen truck. That's on a nice day - cold is tough on battery vehicles in addition to humans wanting cabin heat!
Might be a problem finding the required charger when you get there, too.

Best use of electric power is in a limited distance with an extended charge available when the truck is idle.
Such as a work truck in a 100 mile range area that is back at home base after work to recharge at a normal rate, which is much better for the battery pack.

Trouble is these trucks are going to be more expensive up front compared to a hydrocarbon powered go-anywhere vehicle.

....and the beat goes on.....smoking smiley

Here's the Hagerty article. [click.member.hagerty.com]

Yes a diesel truck is still more practical, but then again many folks are driving big trucks to just go to get to work and go shopping? They spend $50K to $70K to do it. If folks were practical they'd all be driving around in low priced compact sedans.

Considering the price the Hummer is impressive compared to what was available five years ago in electric vehicles. If the vehicle is like most EV's it will have a 100K battery warranty.

Did anyone notice it has 4-wheel steering capabilities including "crab" mode and it can change ground clearance significantly via air suspension ride?

I can guarantee you I'll never own anything like that but some cool tech none the less. My buddy from way back in grade school led the design team for the project.

My...how we forget...electric powered things... All modern TRAINS are ELECTRIc trains...and by little electric motors...lots of torque and power there for sure.

I think I saw an article about some company working on an ALL ELECTRIC powered passenger plane. Might be solar I think...no clouds to worry about...just 100% closer hotter sun during the daytime to power it. Seems to me it had a really L O N G wing span though.

Please post references that show/Prove the existence of these so called Modern Electric Trains.
Other than some urban light-rail systems, all REAL Locomotives that I am aware of are Diesel-Electric, which makes them a Hybrid at best. eye rolling smiley
So, as stated earlier, there currently just isn't any substitute for the Energy Density of Hydrocarbons.

Yes electric/battery small airplanes are gaining interest from flight training schools. Most training flights are one to two hours and the plane recharges before the next training session. It will come down to the costs, but the small electric trainer is becoming less expensive than a new internal combustion engine aircraft. Not to mention quieter inside and outside compared to an old Cessna trainer.

Okay Dave, so I have to admit, those have decent range.
But for $70,000.oo do they have to look so GOOFY? sad smiley
The so called truck version looks like a Honda Ridgeline with a Cartoon Face, and the SUV version looks like a furd exploder with a cartoon face!
If I were to turn a corner at an international car show, and suddenly see them, I would immediately think that they were some Japanese Concept Vehicles never intended to actually see use on public roads. hot smiley
