Installing a new soft top
Posted by: SwedishVair ()

Im about to, after winter storing, to install a new soft top. I have done it once before some 12 to 15 years ago. At that time i was a bit anoyed because i could not find an instruction for an installation from scratch of a new top. The service manual only describes adjusting various problems with the top.
Is there anything avaliable now ?

"Growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional"

-64 convertible since -89.....-61 Rampside since -12

The vert is now 55 years old, most of them in Sweden with me and the missus

Those are good. I installed my own in the mid 70s. It came from J C Whitney with instructions. Somewhere I got Clarks instructions as well and used them both. Its a two person (if your wife isn't one of them) warm day job. Last year I paid to have done, I don't see that it was any better than when I did it with the help of BIL.

A few years ago someone did a great post about installing a top. Pictures galore. I think they also had tips.

1964 Shop Manual Supplement, installation starts on page 10-35.

These are the instructions I used to install tops.

Remember! The screws that hold the trim sticks (at the base of the rear window/rear of top) to the body are two different lengths. The shorter bolts go in the side trim sticks, the longer ones in the center or rear trim stick (the long one). If you put the long screw in the side trim stick, it will come THROUGH the body! The length difference is only a 1/2" or so. Easy to get them mixed up if not paying attention.sad smiley
