Corvair oil filters are unique.

Unless your nearby town is large and there are Corvairs around, you may have to order it from a larger town like El Paso or Dallas.

Auto parts stores do not stock things that do not sell / turnover.

We are fortunate here in our rural area. The Napa always has one 1038 on the shelf.

Some of the Napa stores here in the Bay Area have their "Napa Gold" brand oil filters in stock. Short of that they can send them to another local store overnight. They also have napaonline.com if one of their stores is not local to you.

Summit Racing has the Wix filters, and here in the Bay Area, orders most often arrive the next day (they have a distribution center in Nevada)

My other go-to is Rock Auto. Even with shipping, their prices are competitive but the orders take a few days to show up.

I most often use the Wix brand but the few times I've used the Napa brand, I had no issues (I think it might be a rebranding of the Wix).

And yes, compared to a small block Chevy, these filters are "expensive". On the other hand, compared to the "other" flat 6 engines out there, its not that bad.

Back before I built out a supply by finding a "case" on discount.. I would always have the store order 2 filters at a time.

I would re-order every oil change so I always had a spare sitting. Oil filters can fail, seam split or seal blow out, as well as a bad fuel pump can force a un-scheduled oil change...it is always good to have one on the shelf.

When I realized who different the filter was, and my trouble importing, I bought the adapter. Much easier to go into my warehouse and pick a filter that I stock 600 of, than pay Fedex a minimum of $75, plus duties.

I just imported a timing chain and thermostat for a friend's Mini. $50 in parts and $102 in freight and duties.

Wasn't there at recent thread that mentioned the quality of Wix filters had declined lately?
