RobertC,
EMs don't have any of those issues, no tube with cardboard just a single tube from front to rear. The main problem areas are usually just obviously worn parts or being adjusted wrong. I've never had the OP's issue.

RE above mentioned worn parts:

The pin that attaches the shift coupler to the shaft wears.

The original hole in the coupler is a slight oval - diameter of the pin.

The hole in the coupler can wear round and cause issues.

3rd gear now present and accounted for. Removed, cleaned, greased and reassembled shifter mechanism and made a very slight clutch adjustment, and all's well. Thanks for the advice!

Really fond of this guy, he's responded so well to moderate mechanical effort, hasn't fought me much. Heck, he even seems to have purged the air from the brakes all on his lonesome, now has a reasonably high hard pedal and stops good and straight.

Not bad for a floorless, garbage-filled heap that was a racoon condo and went for next to nothing. Gotta schedule time w/ the local shutterbug and get some decent pics.

The brakes will continue to get better as the shoes wear to the drums. It seems to take a few thousand miles even when you have the shoes cut to fit the drums.
